Police rescued a man from an enraged crowd threatening to "necklace" him in Palm Ridge, Johannesburg, on Wednesday, Gauteng police said.
Colonel Noxolo Kweza said the man was accused of stealing a lawn mower.
No arrests had been made and police were investigating.
Necklacing refers to a tyre doused, or filled with petrol, placed round a victim's neck and set alight.
