Police station attack

No surprise that the suspects were mainly retired police and retired military.

What do you mean 'now'? Cults are often criminal, just not so much in South Africa
I'd assumed the suspects were career economic criminals but now it is unfolding like the church attacked the police station on some personal slight on the church

If it turns out that they attacked the Police because of some church ideology does it become an act of terrorism?

Would be an interesting question if so. Off the top of my head I would say, yes?

I see our esteemed minister of po-po reckons "there is no church there, it's just satanism"
WTF Fikile ?
Stop creating drama about **** that doesn't exist. Next thing you know "the devil made me do it" will be an acceptable defense in court
What a mampara :(

Inside cop killers’ horror sex cult

They had no fewer than 100 sex slaves, girls as young as 12 who were freed alongside tiny babies early yesterday morning. Leaders of the Mancoba Seven Angels Ministry cult – called “angels” by their members – have emerged as the alleged masterminds behind Tuesday night’s massacre of five police officers at the police station in the tiny Eastern Cape town of Engcobo.

Three of the seven Mancoba brothers suspected of involvement in the murders of the officers were killed during a shoot-out with police on Friday. National police commissioner General Khehla Sithole confirmed to City Press that “not less than 100” young girls between the ages of 12 and 21 were rescued from the cult’s premises.

He said the “indoctrinated and brainwashed” girls and young women were taken to social workers for counselling. “In this church it is forbidden to have identity documents. Children are not allowed to have birth certificates and they are not allowed to attend school,” Sithole said. Allegations that the rescued girls were sex slaves will form part of the investigation.

It has emerged that the cult – run by the seven Mancoba brothers and their mother – was well known to the state.

What the actual fahrk??? Waco anyone?

From recent Time mag article on the Waco standoff:
...unprecedented in the annals of American law enforcement.
Never before have so many heavily armed and totally committed individuals barricaded themselves in a fortified compound in a direct challenge to lawful federal warrants...

Nowhere near the scale, 75 dead and it took LE 51 days to take them out, a most embarrassing situation. Here we take them out fairly quickly, but do not seem to apply the same sense of urgency when it comes to errant ANC leaders.

And as usual nothing is done till it's too late.

Wonder why these dudes lost the plot totally and shot cops in the first place, the police station was apparently only 3km away from their enclave, that gives new meaning to sh#ttin on your own doorstep?!

Apparently their money had been running low for quite some time and they were forcing their believers to give their belongings to the "Church" and sell everything to get funds in.

Edit, 3km not 300m

While it may not be the same scale, its very similar. Especially for us where our cults aren't normally gun-toting nutjobs. They're usually unarmed nutjobs.

Engcobo cult’s deadly plan exposed

Engcobo - Police officers at Engcobo in the Eastern Cape are traumatised after finding out that the killer cult gang which shot dead five of their colleagues were planning more attacks on the police.

The Star has established that crime intelligence discovered that some police officers in Engcobo were to be “individually killed” at their homes by the gang.

But their plan was aborted on Friday night when the task team - activated by national commissioner General Khehla Sitole - shot dead seven of the gang’s 20 members, who had murdered five police officers and a retired soldier on Wednesday.

The gang members, who the police said were the first to open fire on officers, were shot dead on the premises of the controversial Mancoba Seven Angels Ministries Church in Nyanga, about 3km from the police station where the officers were massacred.

A day after the bloodbath, some officers fled their homes, fearing further attacks on their lives.

An Engcobo landlord said their tenant, who is a detective, fled his flat after fearing for his life.

“He told me they had received information that further attacks on them had been planned. He said he feared being killed at night in his flat,” the landlord said.

Provincial police spokesperson Captain Khaya Tonjeni said trauma counselling for police officers was being offered through the SAPS’s employee health and wellness programme.

In a televised interview on Sunday, Mancoba Seven Angels Ministries Church leader Banele Mancoba said he had heard that his brother Thandazile was involved in the massacre at Engcobo police station. Thandazile was among the gang members shot dead by the police on the church’s premises.

Some gang members are reportedly still on the run.

Hectic stuff. The policeman must have known about the gang and the missing girls but must have been afraid to speak out. Even after this police "victory", I don't see pics of the outstanding suspects. Why? With one murder every half hour or so, South Africa is not for the light hearted.

You love seeing pics of suspects you should visit a police station. They have lots of pictures of wanted suspects. Or pick up a community rag.

You clearly underestimate the power of multimedia communication. Every cellphone has a camera and can take and send pictures. Nowadays most people have cellphones. Even the poor. By holding back the info, it makes the police look stupid. What are they afraid of? Let the public help finding the fugitives. Be open with the issue. If the police are afraid they must say so.

It is obvious people and local people knew about this cult before the shooting. And expanding on that, the police and communities know the criminals in their midst and help hide them. How does publishing pictures help when everyone knows and hides the criminal element. Some help the criminals because they know and like them others keep mum out of fear. It's not unheard of for corrupt cops to supply witness info to criminals.

Well, I was not aware that everyone knows and hides the criminal element. In Colombia always there were a few who discretely forwarded info to the relevant authorities. If you are correct, South Africa has a bigger issue at hand. #GodHelp
