A question regarding the article
Live pigs were gutted... How else were they supposed to be killed? Gutting of animals for food is still common practice in most non commercial areas, why is this accepted then?

How about killing the pig first?

Question again: how?
If slitting of the throught is not acceptable what is?

Sorry if this a bit too disturbing for most of the "stadsjapies" but gutting is the most common practice of killing stock in the world.

How else were they supposed to be killed? Um, they should not have been killed! The pigs were stolen and savaged by a bunch of cop savages.

The cops joined in and did nothing to stop the original mob from hacking the pigs up. Others even just drove off rather than get involved. But seriously, this is barbaric. Hacking off the hind quarters while the pig is still alive is just wrong.

Gutting and slitting of the throat are not the same thing. But then maybe only 'stadsjapies' have had the education to enable that distinction.

Yes, the theft of the pigs is the real issue here. And I aggree that that should not be tollerated, but the whole article is written as animal cruelty from a verry biast point of view.

If a truck overturned filled with fruit, steeling the fruit is just as unacceptable.

The old saying, how a country treats its animals says a lot about that society...

Ug Ja, but they were all hungry and they deserved to eat.

The point I'm trying to make here is the cop's behaviour was unacceptable. If they are going to join in with the mob and steal pigs (or fruit, whatever the cargo) ... WTF are they going to do to your family when you call in a burglary??? ... OH, hey, the burglars missed this digital camera. I like it, I'll take it... Oh well, they raped the women here, why don't I do it too?

HTF can you trust them? HTF can they arrive on the job drunk? As quoted from the article:
She said some of the police on the scene "reeked of alcohol".

Yea sorry your right, gutting would be slitting open the stomach. Got confused with the practice of letting the animal bleed first to

There are many good cops but the problem is that the few that are corrupt create a lasting impression. Plus paying them R3000-00 a month doesn't help matters much (although it's not an excuse for being corrupt).

Find myself agreeing with you - I dont know why anyone would want to do that job for such little money.

It goes further than that: because it's such a low salary it attracts less skilled and capable people (apart from the people that do it as a calling). The key to a good police force is not the number of cops, but the number of skilled capable cops.

Indeed, the starting salary for the NYPD, coupled with the benefits package, meant that the calibre of people just taking the exams was high.

They are systematically working out the skilled cops though, have been for years.
In places, they have actually taken some back on contract to help sort out the chaos that remained.

It takes a special person to do this type of job, not necessarily a highly skilled one. A far worse disease in the police today is apathy for the work they are supposed to do.

With regard to the statements everyone has made.

The police members that were involved should be prosecuted for theft, as their actions are unacceptable.

However with regard to stopping the people from killing and taking the animals, does anybody know how many police officers were on the scene and how many looters?

I think that the police were proberly outnumbered by quite a large percentage and in a case like this what should they do. They were out in the countryside and any backup was proberly quite far away. They would have their state firearms and a can of pepper spray, they could not shoot at the looters because it is only theft and no ones lives are in danger and if they tried pepper spray they would be quickly overwhelmed by an enraged mob.

They should have ensured the safety of the driver and the SPCA members,.

I would also like to point out that the people doing the slaughtering saw nothing wrong with it, they see it as salvage and they were not inherently cruel just indifferent as it is a normal part of rural life
