Police take down illegal Netflix and Amazon streaming ring

European police busted an illegal streaming ring that provided service to 2 million people and was so sophisticated that it had its own customer-service team.

The criminal network operated for over five years and offered more than 40,000 channels, movies, documentaries and other content, according to European police coordination agency Europol.

The scale of the operation shows how the big streaming platforms still struggle to deal with content theft as criminals find new ways to hack their anti-piracy systems.

What anti-piracy systems? Seriously?

All these guys did was open legal accounts of each service, "download" content and then stream it off of their own servers.

A child can do that part and it is done literally daily across hundreds of platforms.

The rest was obviously very sophisticated with the billing and support parts.

The whole streaming pool is getting really muddy.
When you start having bits and pieces per service that you want to watch then its suddenly a case of multiple subscriptions needed.
If its cheap and easy to use then people will use it, if not then piracy will fill the gaps.

Yes indeed. It's not Netflix or DStv that set the distribution and geofencing rules, but the content owners, who do so in their distribution agreements with those delivery services.
