Mthatha - A policewoman was stabbed and robbed off her service pistol in Butterworth, Eastern Cape police said on Sunday.
Captain Jackson Manatha said the 34-year-old constable had gone to a local supermarket to buy herself lunch on Saturday.
“The constable was on duty and was wearing full uniform with bullet proof vest. When she returned to her car and while she was entering her car, she was pulled from behind and stabbed on her lower body and left hand. The suspect grabbed the service pistol of the constable and ran towards a fruit and vegetable shop.”
He said hawkers alerted the patrolling members of Butterworth Crime and Prevention Unit about the robbery.
“Police then acted very swiftly and chased the suspect whom they cornered near the fruit and vegetable shop. He was arrested and the knife that was used in the robbery was also confiscated from him.”
The constable was rushed to Butterworth Hospital where she was treated and discharged.
“The 30-year-old suspect has been charged with robbery with a weapon, other than fire arm. He will appear before the Butterworth Magistrate Court on Tuesday.”
