Politicians circumcise initiates

Those rituals which cause pain, mutilation and are motivated by peer pressure need to be reviewed.... with all due respect.

so can i go and pierce my nipple? i mean, i'm sure there's a bit of pain and mutilation involved, but shouldn't i be allowed to do to my own body what I please?

What does that have to do with an African Ritual which is demanded by your peers?

body piercing is also largely a ritual which causes pain & mutilation and is motivated by peer pressure (mostly)

isn't it the same thing then?

This is a case of culture. If you do it you will have less culture under your foreskin.

Personally, let adults do what they want. Even then, pressuring people into sexual mutilation because of tradition or culture or religious superstition instead of actual medical necessity is barbaric and supporting it feeds this beast.

Let people decide for themselves. From what I've come across there are WAY more circumcised men who wish they weren't than uncircumcised men who wish they were. At least the one route offers an option for later-in-life than an impossible circumstance.

Barbarism has no place in civilised society and advocating is is simply stupid. What I'm saying is give people an informed choice in the matter instead of a) sexually mutilating babies or b) conning obviously impressionable youths into self-mutilation because "It's expected as part of our culture, otherwise you don't fit in and will always be a boy instead of men" which is psychological and physical abuse of the highest order.

um no. sorry.

Well, it is decorative. Some do get themselves circumcised for the look of it, other's put up a Prince Albert piercing, others even go so far as to cut the glans in half for the added sensitivity.

Wonder how many uncircumcised males feel the need to do that? :D

lovely  but really has nothing to do with this thread. Circumcision as practiced in South Africa is a ritual that is steeped in tribalism, peer pressure, manhood, repercussions, etc. It is hardly a decision made by informed adults. It is surrounded by misinformation and superstition. If an informed consenting adult wants to do it for his own reasons that is one thing, but a young man of 18 who has basically been forced into it because he will be labelled an inkwenkwe is another thing.

No, no--I understand and agree completely. I'm a big advocate of the word consent :D

Oh and can't believe they selling this nonsense as a HIV preventive.

Well, every now and then a hand slips and they cut the whole thing off and I'm told that's rather effective at preventing HIV...
