"Poll" - An IPCop HOWTO - would anyone be interested ?

Sometime back, I wrote a Smoothwall HOWTO which was geared toward PPPoE devices - at the time, it was written for a MyWireless modem.

Would anyone be interested in a more indepth IPCop HOWTO, that would cover any Ethernet devices that can run in PPPoE mode ?

That would include ADSL, iBurst and MyWireless.
It would touch very lightly on the type of PC you would need and some advise on buying extremely cheap NICs (network cards)
I would also include basic info on setting up an internal network with links to further info.

I would most likely need some help on the iBurst side - or rather, confirmation that it runs the same as MyWireless does with PPPoE.

I'd also need to do some research into the most common ADSL routers to get instructions on how to put them into bridged mode and research into USB ADSL routers/modems.

I'd briefly cover dyndns and simple NAT for running web servers / ssh / ftp (possibly would need help here too)

I don't want to do this if the interest isn't there.

So, what do you think ?

BB you got me sorted with Ipcop a whiles back, but an advanced "howto "would be nice.

Some parts make me lose the plot, like the web proxy thing in transparent mode, and i am not convinced that i have the cache actually working.

And the snort section as well,
BTW i did fiddle around with the non-approved addons and got several working nicely, it also gave me a chance in using winscp and putty, now being a bit of a n00b with those tools and NUX it was great to do more.

BB tell us how to skim the head, flow the methane and torgue the specs.
and being a rather paranoid type, a how to put a virus scanner on the IPCOP box to take care of server and client.
And, shoot me coz now now I am listing, :) SNORT!!! pLEASE.....MY OINK gives me errors :/

So yea great idea, coz of all the distros available, Ipcop is definately one of the best.

Yes please do a "How to" i have tried the smoothwall and gave up. I tseemed pretty straight forward but i think i lost something in the how to guide.
 
Thanks oaks - I'll start looking into it (got another thing I need to look into for w1zard too !)

I don't know how advanced it'll be - things like Snort etc. - will see how it goes, I can do linkage through to other sites for more advanced topics.
 
If you do this with a specific focus on assistance for ADSL users, I'm pretty sure you'll be allocated a freebie prize by RPM and through the common acclamation of forumites, without even having to enter a competition! BTW, methinks the same stance should be adopted for TheRodent, given his wireless driver contribution and any other peep who contributes anything clearly out of pure altruism and in the spirit of open source freedoms...
 
mbs - I'll definately call on TheRodent should I get into technical areas I need assistance with. It depends how the document goes.

If it's decent enough, I may ask rpm if he's got a page to dedicate to it, depending on whether I put in screenshots or not.

This kinda stuff is actually more useful for SOHO than a personal home connection.
Now that I've moved my office home, I've got a bunch of computers all sitting on my internal LAN happily protected by IPCop - and my own domain should I ever need it, bbmatt.dyndns.org

Yeah for sure - PPPoE is pretty much plug 'n play.

The install, while easy, can be confusing if your not familiar with assigning IP address or the terminology. I don't think the HOWTO will touch on ORANGE interfaces, I'll make note of that, but stay with the RED+GREEN setup.

One of the only real show-stoppers is hardware and autodetection of network cards.

The idea of the HOWTO is really a primer more detailed than my Smoothwall one that goes a little bit more into getting hardware and the configuration right from putting the install CD in up to connecting to the net.
 
BB just refresh my memory , but what was the orange for ? when i was looking to do the setup i was going to use three nic's and that was where it all went downhill with the colour coding.
 
Orange is used for a DMZ (de-militarized zone ), which is basically a computer you setup outside your internal network. This would usually run services that need to be accessible from remote locations.

It still sits behind the firewall, but in it's own "Zone"
 
My nics are all green, atleast once you get the dust off them :p

Seriously though, a Howto would be great. The more users out there with decent security the better. SA ISP's have never been very good with security let alone educating their users.

With the exception of MTNNS, I will take my hat off to them for providing a World Class service not only when it comes to security but in general.

Feeling really slack today - in fact, been feeling a tad pap all day.
Going to eat food and watch videos and that's it.

The Guide is a Weekend job ! - got some new rechargeable batteries for the old camera so I can take photos of - well, I'm not really sure - photos of how to plug network cards into a computer - haha. Seriously tho, I'm not sure how to get screengrabs from a Curses menu system, so I'll need to take photos instead.

Hell, that throws me back somewhat! I recall using a screen-scrape tool many years ago for this purpose, tho for the life of me I can't remember what it was... Mebbe a plain old [Shift-PrtScr] will work as a dump, provided it's on top of an underlying GUI - come to think of it, KDE has a screengrab utility in it - I've just checked - it's called 'KSnapshot', and it will dump the window under the cursor for you...
 
The problem is, IPCop is installed from a bootable CD - not from an OS as such.
I guess the only way to do it would be to connect the TV out of the video card to another computer ?
 
Is there an easy way to make the bootable cd ? i have 3 coasters now ... i managed smoothwall just fine but this IP cop is just stuborn

Anyone ? how 2 make the bootable cd ?
