polo 2003 major gearbox and clutch problems

I took my car in for 90,000 km service after the following problems
- gearbox lost oil
- gear slips out of 5th , could be linkage or pinion
- gearbox noisy when pulling off problem related to drive shaft
- gets stuck in reverse some times

the mechanic recommended this be sorted urgent but to open the box and strip it could be R2,000 (just to tell me the problem)
to fix problem could R5,000 or R30,000 for recon box, which is very short supply
he also recommended a new clutch kit if gearbox is replaced
my sister has exact polo with round lights and her cluth was replaced at 50,000 km)
should i flog this car i got a good offer on trade

Well if the car is yours not owned by the bank than u making a mistake..........gearbox problems comes and goes but u can buy a new GEarbox for about R2.5k or cheaper if u trade ur old one..........and then ur car is good as new

Shouldn't be more then R5000 for a reconditioned box if you trade yours in, phone around. Also the clutch kit can be had for R1000 at Goldwagen.

A suggestion...time for both you and your sister to buy automatics. You must both be doing something very wrong to go through clutches and gearboxes in that mileage.

Honestly Fazda it's not the first time I've seen people complain about clutches on a VW. But then again every tom, dick and harry drives a VW these days so maybe you are right...

Not the point at all. You get failures of components every day, however, historically to have a clutch pack up at this mileage is unusual, and is very often directly related to the way the car has been driven.

To try and finger VW for the fault is unnecessary. You will possibly find that a person who is heavy on the clutch will nail it in any car no matter what the make is. Having raced VW's I have found their clutches to be very good, but right here at the dealership, I have seen one particular man go through 3 clutches in 100 000km, and I am afraid I put that directly down to his driving style.
