Polo Gti DSG, How Is It??

Hi Guys
A friend of mine is looking to buy a new car, preferably a Polo GTI. His looking for one to test drive at a dealer, but asked me what I think and I don't know much about it.

Does anyone have a Polo Gti? how is the car? Does the Polo Gti make the same kind of sound when changing gear on a DSG? some kind of like a "burp" sound or something? He told me the sound happens on a normal Golf Gti but his not sure about the Polo?

Yeah the DSG's all do that, it's basically rev matching for smoother changes.

DSG is something to experience for yourself, nobody can really translate how awesome it is. Very few people realise that it's nothing like any other automatic.


Polo GTI is a nice car but a little small for my taste/needs. I would never pay the new price for one but if it came down to a second hand Polo GTi or older Golf GTi I'd probably make the same decision again.
 
Even now, I still worry about the stress on the engine and the whole turbo / super charge thing.
Its actually an awesome car, but considering eagle ford are selling the Focus ST1 for 279k, I would pick that.

I agree. The Focus is supposed to compete with the Golf class so if you can get a Focus at the same price as a Polo, I'd go for the Focus.
 
Bloody hell I didn't realise the pricing was that bad.

I would also have the Focus then...unless fuel economy is your main concern.

The Focus is HEAVY while the Polo is exceptionally frugal.

The old Focus was heavy, the new one isnt that bad. I would say the difference wouldnt be that high between the polo and the focus.

The only reason to go for the polo would be if you absolutely must have DSG
 
A friend of mine has got a major issue with his Polo GTI, which apparently isn't too isolated. I must check if it has been sorted yet... His car uses a massive amount of oil. As in, 1000km's driven after a top-up, and it was basically dry (no oil light came on). The dealership told him that it is a known issue. They tried to fix it, and failed. The dealership said they might have to replace the engine under warranty (it is still new, has not yet done over 30k, I think). It appears they had to do this before.

I know my friend does not abuse his car. He drives it fast on occasion, but not abnormally so, I am sure.

As an aside, the DSG box is obviously nice in traffic.

Even if it takes 2l/100km off it's old usage it still won't be anywhere near the Polo GTI.
 
Although manufacturer claims are bull**** they are at least all measured on the same standard.

Focus ST : 7,2 l/100km Combined

Polo GTI : 5,9 l/100km Combined


So yes that does look like it's drastically less than the old 2.5L motor, but I'm still not quite convinced. Then again for the money and value paying a little more in fuel is hardly a concern if it's that close.

quoted figures polo 5.9 focus st 7.2
so its around 1.3 l/100 km. Real world will probably be quite different though.

The old focus real world was easily above 11l/100km. I have heard the new one is much much better though.
I dont see it being less than 9 though. Then again, i dont see the polo gti being less than 7.5.

Lets say the difference is 2l / 100km.
Drive 400km per week. Thats a saving around R104 a week / R416 a month.
Polo Gti is 290k. Focus St1 on special for 279k.
10k difference would take 24 months to make up

DSG is the only real reason for me to pick the polo, that and the ST1 interior is not great

Makes me wonder how ford expect to sell fiesta ST's this month?
 
my friend has one, i drove it a while back, really really fun car to drive. :)

as the others said, it all comes down to your needs, if you can live with slightly smaller car, and have to have DSG, then the Polo i perfect. Just dont buy it brand new, unless you get an awesome deal, try to get a 2nd hand 2013, should get a good price.

Also, personally, i prefer the VW interior to the Ford.

The focus looks pretty awesome, especially for that price. Problem is he has to have an Auto, he called Eagle Ford after checking the link out (thanks syntax) and he really likes it, but unfortunately it only comes in Manual, which kinda sucks for such a cool car.

2l/100km is perhaps an extra R100 in fuel between fill-ups?

Hardly a big price to pay for getting a Focus over a Polo. It's a class above.

for the price: fiat, sorry ABARTH 500...
i know, its a micro mini and fiat and this and that... but sit inside one, then go sit in the bland polo/fiesta..
fiat 500 and mini's are just made...different man!
 
The only thing going for DSG at the moment is that it sounds cool when you change gears, oh yeah and its auto..

The Focus is way faster than even the Golf Gti! Plus value for money taking into account the price. The price of a Brand New Polo according to Polo Gti is like R280 000 something (standard)..

The Abarth 500 is ridiculously overpriced for what it is...

DSG is a different kind of drive, i do agree that sometimes its nice to shift, but 90% of the time, DSG is awesome.

As for the abarth, was at a track day with them. Awesome car, but i dont think i could drive one and not feel a little bit emasculated
