My sister asked me to accompany her to test drive some new cars, specifically the polo, fiesta and corsa.

We drove the Polo TSi Comfortline thinking it was going to be the best out of the bunch, but we were in for a shock.

Firstly the interior looked dated as if it had come from a car a decade back and plastic chrome strips had been added everywhere. It gave the impression that the designers had a very limited budget and just took an old design and tried to bling it up a little. It wasn't offensive, just excitement sapping.

The ride wasn't much better. It's suspension was the least sofisticsted between the new corsa and the fiesta. The engine however was poor. At idle it's fairly silent. But touch the accelerator and it growns loudly. There is also an irratating delay between prodding the accelerator anything happening. It felt very weak and unreaponsive in relation to the others. The gear change was very notchy, with 1st gear not engaging smoothly. It could have just been that car though, although it only had 5000km on the clock.

On top of it all VW offered R20k less trade in than the other dealers.

We drove the corsa 1.0T and fiesta trend 1.0T which both had great suspension, decent interiors and were well specced. Both their engines where silent and powerful with instant responsiveness. The Corsa had few off putting body panels, but made up for it with the intellilink entertainment system which pairs with your android/ios phone and does navigation and other apps and self parking and blindspot assist. The fiesta looked decent inside and out, but didn't have the additional tech.

I felt the same way when I test drove the previous non-TSI Polo.

There's also the little detail about the Polo being a known high-risk vehicle for hijackings. Just saying.

Boring + dangerous = not great combo.

I'd say the new Corsa is a good bet for you there. Then again, the Peugeot 208 also has a great touch-screen system and a 5 year full maintenance plan (plus your sister will enjoy its looks).

Didn't try a Hyundai i20? Or a etios?
Sies

Clio 4 brother!
She has to study 2 more years and then 2years internship and another 2years community service. So she needs 6 years of reliable driving and should something go wrong she needs there to be a dealership close by. She will most likely be in a semi rural area in the middle of no where. That kind of dictates that she goes for a car with a more established after sales service base.
I'd go for the fiesta and yes the polo is not great
The fiesta was my favourite. I would have taken a fiesta trend with leather interior which was R210k on the road. Even the auto 6speed fiesta was decent. Engine and ride between the corsa and fiesta was equally good and very difficult to pick one's drive over the other. Both have amazing engines that produce loads of low down torque with a wide power band and zero lag.

In the end she decided to go with the Adam Jam 1.0T. Nobody ever sits at the back and the front is very spacious. Looks better than the Corsa, but with the same engine in a lighter body and more gadgets.

Not sure what car you drove, but can't be the polo TSI. My wife has one on loan from VW while her car is in for a service. For a cheapie it goes! Sorry, but if you call this car a slouch and unresponsive you aren't being truthful.

My sister took an Etios over a Ford Figo - why she did this I will never understand :wtf:

My sister also bought the Etios. The interior with a sticker for a speedo is cringe-worthy. That being said, it's not the worst ride and the engine is alright.

We drove a demo Tsi Comfortline with 5000km on the clock.

Price wise at around R200k it competes with the corsa 1.0T and Fiesta 1.0T.

Both the fiesta and corsa have instant throttle response, jab the throttle quickly and the cars respond with matched urgency. The polo doesn't, it has a more damped response to positive pedal action. The polo is also 20 odd kw down on the other 2 in power so it does feel sluggish in relative terms. If you stepping out of a 1.0-1.4 and into the polo, the power delivery feels great, but step out of the competition, corsa 1.0T or fiesta 1.0T and into the polo and the polo is a let down.
Yes there is a Highline version of the polo with higher power output (still below the other 2) but then it's R50k+ more than the competition.

I see there's a 66kw version; we definitely didn't get this one on loan.
Jeepers, the highline 88kw goes for R244K. Nuts!

Edit: Out of interest checked out the specs. The Ford and VW have the exact same 0-100. 10.8 seconds. Exact same fuel economy too.

Yeah. If you can afford R244k for a polo, you can afford R271k for the entry level Golf or R240k for the Focus Trend which all have similar engines.

:wtf: Etios?????????????????!! Are you mad, he's already said that he didn't like the finish of the Polo, and you suggest a car that has possibly the worst interior and finish of any car in living history!!!
