Pool cleaner material breaking down - chemical attack?

Hi all

Please see attached photo of my Zodiac pacer with a fairly recently-purchased flexible disc that is softening and disintegrating from what I assume is a chemical reaction with something in the water. Same thing happened with the previous disc.

Has anyone had this happen, and know the cause? Am I simply over-chlorinating? (It's a conventional pool; not salt.) Using a pool cover almost year-round for the last few years, I have struggled to gauge the right amount of HTH to put in, in the absence of much solar radiation to break it down.

Thanks for any input.

Yip too much chemicals and I suggest you get the mixtures right or your pipes will be next as happened to me some years ago.

Have you had your water tested?

Check your water for calcium hardness. Do you have a marble plaster or fibreglass pool?

If the former then your walls should also be scaling (being eaten away).

Many thanks everyone!

I'm getting experts in next weekend for a couple of things so will run it by them, get testing done and save what I can.

I grew up with no pool covers and cutting out that radiation has made my sort-of-OK estimates become a huge liability. Live and learn...

No adult parties no heheh (no kids either). You might have to help me with the reference... alcohol? KY? Never seemed corrosive to me... :-D

But, surely your pool maintenance routine would have you checking the PH levels, etc which would have alerted you that something was off?

Fairly new to pool maintenance myself, and have a cover too and I have only been using those HTH sticks that check everything. 99 bucks a tube. I know the purists don't like them , but works perfectly for me, and never had an issue with pool - even when pump was forced to be off for a whole month in Jan this year, it only got cloudy in week 5. With the cover on , I never have to put in chlorine regularly. Whereas it normally is about 5-6 scoops a week (100k liter pool) when cover is off, I may need to do that every 2 months!

Recommend those HTH sticks if you have never used them before. Works for me
