Hi all

I have a 5 x 2.5m pool that I'm looking to heat up.

I'm currently looking at a 5kw heat pump. Would this be sufficient?

If so, I'm looking for info on how long would it take to heat up. I'll probably only use it once or twice a month so not looking to run it all the time. What would be the electricity usage in units per hour as well?

Another question, which smart switch can I use on my DB so I can switch on and off via WiFi.

Thanks

Sounds pretty small for heating up "sufficiently"
I've considered similar to dump excess solar into like 1month before we plan to start swimming, but never got round to calculating losses with a cover vs time-to-heat-up
vs just pumping through a Solar-pool-heating setup

It's much cheaper to use solar heating for a pool. Unless you really need the water over ±27 degrees, in which case you'll be spending R4000+ a month to heat the pool with a heat pump.

Not taking into account any other variables:

Assuming a wanted temp of 28deg and 24 hours to heat up to that temp, about 8kW.. so worst case scenario 32 units give or take.

However, there are plenty of other variables to take into account, probably biggest being the ambient temp where the heat pump would be installed.. colder temps, mean longer/more electricity to heat up..

I'm considering this too at some point, have a small pool so wouldn't need a big unit. Currently have the cheap solar water heating panels, the ones that just push the water through lots of pipe.

The problem I have is that the pipe run (the feeds from the pump to the panels) is so long that these panels hardly help at all and are utterly useless if it's not a hot sunny day at which point I may as well not even have them working.

It could be a nice thing to use excess PV for in the spring and late autumn months.

Which area are you?
I bought a heat pump from Lex Pools in Roodepoort and it included a pool cover.

Works great; it's WiFi enabled, inverter-based and heats a similarly sized pool to from 18 to 30-degrees in about 8 hours. It is a 16kW (max) unit, though.

I'm in the Randburg area

Would you mind sharing estimate costs and possibly electricity usage for that scenario?

Would a smaller unit just need longer to hear up? Alliance website says a 5.4kw unit is for pools up to 25000 litres.

I can't speak into the heat pump, but for DB the go to is the CBI Astute.

Will a Sonoff basic smart switch hooked up to the circuit breaker work? I have one laying around. Otherwise I agree, I have a CBI astute for my pool pump and it works great

Sonoff basic is rated for 10amps of current, check the specs of the heatpump (but generally your heating/pump type equipment needs a POW)

Heat pump is rated 4.9 amps. Sorry forgive my ignorance - what is POW?

Any smart circuit breaker suggestions instead of normal circuit breaker plus CBI timer?

I don't think they do. Could have been a new addition to the range, but I haven't seen them as yet

(Most people use the term breaker for anything DIN mounted which is the below)

If you want a Tuya-based actual "breaker" you can get these:

If your load is more than the smart switch can handle, just add a contactor.

In general, the relays in these sonoffs aren't great. I use a contactor even for my pool pump, just to protect the relay. I had several timers who's relays failed (rates at 16A, but they are still junk).

@PsyWulf If I may ask, which one has seemless integration with other apps such as Home Assist? What's your recommendation on the installation of multiple automated circuit breakers for different applications? In other words, not having too many apps to manage different devices. Hoping Im making sense.
