Greetings all. Just bought a new place and wanted some advice on how to go about closing the pool. The pool is in a shady part of the garden and will be cold so will not use it often to justify the cost and hassle of maintenance. The pool is about 5x4. I wanted to hire some jackhammers and some guys to drill some holes through the floor and collapse the sides. I have done some bullring and have some rubble to backfill but will probably need more and tip soil. Will also compact as I backfill. Any advice on whether im on the right track or any other ideas on what I can use the pool for instead?

Global warming. You are going to wish for that cool pond of water.....

I got this done, but all I can tell you is do it PROFESSIONALLY.

If you do not do this properly you can end up with a massive mess in your garden. Which area are you in?

We got the pool filled in and automated irrigation installed at the same time, best decision we made.

Thank you Snyper. I am in Sandton. I hear you on getting things done professionally.

Regards

Hello, who did the job for you and mind tell me how much you paid for it? We have similar size "pool". TIA!

last post of the thread was R80-90k but that included grass plus irrigation

We recently filled the pool that was installed in 1990. The contractor came with 4 guys and had 4 tons of rubble delivered. This filled the void to 500mm below the rest of the garden. Then soil was laid and the whole surface compacted for a day or two. Then topsoil mixed with compost was added

We have watered the area (12m x 7m) every day. Bought grass cuttings and the gardener started last Thursday

Total cost was R 34 000,00

That included making a paving border 15m long using bricks taken from the surround

Thank you:) Wish me luck!

To each their own - I regret removing our pool 2 weeks a year. The rest of the year im glad its gone
Now that the kids are older, the pool is a right pain in the arse for me. No one is interested in the maintenance but G*d forbid it's not kept in tiptop condition.

Bloody thing hardly gets used and just costs money in water and chlorine (fortunately, with Solar panels installed I don't feel the pain of running the pump any longer)

spot on I have other things to do than worry about a green pool with a 1000 leaves and more date palms again

yea the one day my wife informed me that she got 3 trees for free the guy dropped it off
when i got home and i saw palm trees , 30 min later thanks to the skillsaw it was lying in a heap in log form

naturally i heard lots of bitching ie family relations , mother in law arranged as we love trees

i love trees but palm leaves and those little balls and kreepy ain't friends
i don't regret the little pain i had to endure for 3 weeks instead
of a lifetime of having to deal with the effects of crappy palm trees on the pool
(probably 14 years ago thanks for the de ja vu)

long leaves are crap to catch with a net and the pebbles the same (though the modern nets with the flat portion makes scooping dates up easier) i did not want a whole day of idle kreepy thanbks to a single one i missed

yea the older kids aren't interested so much lately i still enjoy it a few times on the hot days , and since small it is an easy clean once you catch the tune from filthy i often lapse in winter

Good call.

Palm trees are the devils own plant anywhere near a pool.

They are the devil's own plant anywhere within 200 km of me!. I hate the damn things! I was plagued in PTA with them at my place, and when I got rid of them, the neighbours decided to plant the damn things on the boundary and I still had to deal with them.
Now here in CT, I see that the same craze exists with these stupid plants all over the place, and always on the boundaries!

Who was the original idiot of a landscaper who brought this crazy idea to SA I wonder?

An mpi cover does reduce cost by hibernating the pool

But then again they are so pricey that it may just be cheaper to run it year round

Agree the big pools are harder to handle

Small ones is a breeze

I know some guys that just lets it go over winter and then sept/okt a week to have it sorted

Only possible on fibreglass
Marblelite or how ever you spell it you can't try that you gotta keep it tip top or you will be sorry

The secret is don't skimp on runtime too much and chlorine it once you see the turn the longer you wait the more chlorine it takes, and naturally if you shock it half heartedly means a waste of chems

We are slowly replacing all of ours. We removed 7 and have 5 left... Urgh hate them...
