Good day I need to resurface my pool (marbelite surface), due mainly to cracks around and below the mosaic tiling that leaks over a certain level and also due to rough surface and some staining. I got a quote from a local pool company and was surprised at the price quoted; for resurfacing of pool (white colour) R49k, applying new mosaic around the pool and steps R16k, replacement light installed and connected 3k, new light casing fitted with concrete 1k, repairing of structural crack R14.5k, three bag silica sand and replacement of pool filter R2k, bio guard scale inhibitor R320 and bioguard pool magnet R285. The grand total for the quote is R87 180.

My questions are as follows

1. Is the above a reasonable quote to resurface a marbelite pool (87k)?
2. Should I go with marbelite or fibreglass?
3. Any recommendations for comparative quotes?

Depends on how big the pool is and how bad the crack is. I had something similar done about 18 months ago and my quote for marbelite was around 90k and for fibreglass was just under 100k. This was for a 100kl pool.

I got a quote for R60-70k 6 years ago - would recommend fiberglass. Quote sounds decently reasonable.

OR

FILL IT IN, ours is filled in and I regret doing it for one week a year and smile the rest of the year.

My pool is 60 000 litres.

If you maintain it, which you are supposed to, there is no algae..
There's no guarantee. Algae can form for various reasons outside your control. When it does, it will stick to marbelite far more easily than fibreglass.

Happened to me in September last year, took two weeks to determine that the sand in my filter needed replacing (because you have to try different tests and resolutions with the water itself, which takes time, before moving to the internals). In that time, the algae stained the marbelite despite the daily sweeping of the walls while trying to solve the issue...

80KL pool converted from marbalite to fibreglass, R50k, this was 2 years ago.

Fibreglass FTW

PS: a thermal bubble cover reduces maintenance drastically, algae is a thing of the past for me

bloody expensive - unless you have a serious structural issue

At that price I would DIY.

Yeah nah, that is something I personally would not attempt to DIY.

From what I have observed, you really need lots of experience, skill and a trusty wing-man. Both marbelite and fibre-glass need to be worked with quickly, no time to "figure it out" on the fly.

2 years ago, paid about R40K to remarbelite for a 120KL Pool (10.5m x 5.5m). Quote for Fibreglass was 90K.

No structural defects, just that it got stained. When they were doing it, saw that this was probably the 4th time it was being marbelited. Pool built probably in 80s/90s.

Still wish I got my way to put two big holes in it and to then modify it to make it a firepit. In the last 6 months, spent about R6-7K on chemicals alone. Won't talk about water bill to fill it when we had the extreme heat. Then another solar heating panel blew badly yesterday, and we lost lots of water. It's the 3rd one in the last 12 months so that will be another R3K job. Oh and now I will need to fill it again with muncipal water so fsck fsck fsck. Did a 20 minute backwash to remove water last week 😭

OP - seriously just fill it up! A gym membership with one that has a swimming pool will be cheaper!

Solid pool cover is a game changer.. no wind/sun can get to the water for it to evaporate and chemical usage is reduced too.. used to have to do 4 cups of chlorine every two days, this is now up to every 4-6 days.. if I get a bit lazy and there is no chlorine for a day or two, also get zero algae growth, which I would have gotten before having the solid pool cover..

Got that when when we moved in - think it was a 18K cost - and yes agree it was magic. The problem was removing it for the size of pool we have and that ours is sorta kidney shaped. Needed 3 people to do it and loads of water lost and after 5 years of suffering , got rid of it. Have a leaf net cover now which is amazing since nothing falls in, but also after 3 years - it's now starting to tear at the seams .. so guess that needs replacement soon too.

I am just gatvol of this pool and it's continued expenses - its not worth the ROI at all. Probably should have looked at halving the size of pool when we remarbelited it - but was already angry at the 40K cost of the marbelite - forgot the other R8K to fill it up again. Bladder was not an option due to slope on property so we lost all the water.
