I upgraded plasma's from a Samsung ps42d43 to a Samsung ps51d490 3D but kept same DSTV set up (i.e original dual view PVR). Picture quality on new 51" is markedly worse than on old 42". Is this because I am still using a SD PVR ? Would an HD PVR solve the problem ? If so why ?

i am assuming rf? i am no fundi but have you tried playing with the decoders tuner settings and rescanning?

Unfortunately it would appear that the larger the screen size the worse the picture when still using an SD signal as your feed. HD TVs really need an HD signal to perform at their optimum and an SD signal will just highlight the problem. DStv only transmits six channels on HD and you probably won't watch half of them, so it's a question of sitting and waiting until one day HD will be the norm. To obtain DStv HD you would probably need to change your existing dish for a 90cm dish (about R900 for an aluminium one), you would need a dual LNB and an HD PVR (there's one on special for R1,499 for the next few months) and someone would probably have to come and set it up for you so there would be a call out fee for that (R350 - R500). Otherwise just watch DVDs

But...but...that's not supposed to happen! I mean SD = Plasma, right? :P

Anyway there doesn't seem to be a problem, as this generally tends to happen when you upgrade your screen size. I would look at the input source first - if it's connected via RF then maybe try a composite cable. And if that doesn't help then you may need an HD PVR connected via component/HDMI.

rf and i have tried scanning and checked settings. tv sales guy says problem only due to sizeing up and to get hd pvr - but then he is not exactly a neutral and wants another sale

Tv only shows 3D content in 3D, so normal 2D content is not affected and this can't be the problem.

Why would size of plasma cause picture to detioriorate ? I would like to understand the reason before just getting HD PVR. Blu Ray discs play beautifully !

Take a picture at 1 Megapixel on your digital camera

Now zoom in 100%

How does it look?

Ok now zoom in 1000%

How does it look now?

Similarly, the same low ( SD ) resolution output over a larger span will degrade more especially when you use RF,some televisions use some tricks to lower the effect but it's still there

Connected by Rf and I have rescanned (see my post of 08:50). Where would I find the decoder "tuner" settings ? Have been playing around with decoder but do not see any "tuner" settings ?

Thx that makes sense - so step one would be using composite cable and then going HD PVR if still needed ?

Series Series 4
Video Screen Size 51"
Resolution 1,024 x 768

Ouch that resolution...It's even lower than 720p aka HD Ready. You'd be slightly better served with HDMI/Component outs, but really, this TV won't do Blu-ray full justice

Try av cables and see difference, do you really need rf?

Tuner settings are under the menu, just take a look around for it (to confirm I do not have that model so not actually sure it has it but assume it does)
