Sex stays the same but gender has a lot of connotations to it, we probably wouldn't be at this point in the world if people stopped interjecting with "....but you're a guy" or "women don't act like that....."
So long as they stay out of messing with sports, let them live their lives with their audiences. People used to say homosexuals were mentally ill, couple years before that it was demons. We are changing as a society all the time.
We don't have to respect people's pronouns either, but then we don't really need to respect a lot of things - I never understood why somebody needs respect for being the opposite sex, being older or having a title in some irrelevant organization.

If I came out and identified as a he/him I'd be slandered. Which is what I am. A guy (can clearly see that!).
Should rather identify as a gearbox/tyre and be celebrated for that.
