South Africa's population has increased by more than one million people since the 2011 census, Statistic SA (StatsSA) said on Tuesday.

According to its mid-year estimate, the country now had a population of 52.98 million people.

"This is StatsSA's most downloaded release, and is used by various government departments as a denominator upon which they base their planning. It is used by insurance companies," statistician general Pali Lehohla said in a statement.

According to the estimates, the HIV prevalence rate was approximately 10 percent.

"The total number of people living with HIV is estimated at approximately 5.26m in 2013. For adults aged 15 to 49 years, an estimated 15.9 percent of the population is HIV positive," Lehohla said.

The infant mortality rate for 2013 was estimated at 41.7 per 1000 live births. The life expectancy of South Africans had increased by almost a year from the previous reporting period to 59.6 years.

Life expectancy at birth for 2013 was estimated at 57.7 years for males and at 61.4 years for females.

For the period 2006 to 2011, it was estimated that about 264,449 people would migrate from the Eastern Cape. Limpopo was estimated to experience a net out-migration of 227,919 people.

During the same period, it was estimated Gauteng would have a net inflow of 1,046,641 migrants, and the Western Cape of 307,411.

Yay! Another few thousand vehicles to block up Gauteng's freeways.

After the 2011 census fiasco, I take the numbers with a pinch of salt. But then again, most African countries have very unreliable census procedures. I still believe the correct figure is closer to 60million. Who knows though. Africa is full of mysteries :D

I'll hazard a guess we are closer to 70-75 million 80 at a push, running a 60% unemployment rate

I wouldn't know or be able to guess the final figures...but I did a stint of military training at Bluehills in 90's and even then we were given a figure of about 6 million illegal immigrants...I'm sure their numbers have gone up also, adding to the total figures...

Always an extremely interesting publication, but soooooo tedious to use since the data can't be copy pasta'd into a spreadsheet.

Stats SA had a Norwegian(?) or maybe Danish(?) online tool available a few years back, where you could draw your own graphs using all their data. Watching the white population pyramid ebb and flow over the past 20 years was like watching a history documentary. <Attenborough voice> "Here we see dent in the pyramid caused the flight of 20-35 year old males seeking greener pastures as working holidaymakers in the UK, and the resulting drop in birth rates, as expected". "Now this years data shows the effects of the global financial crisis and decreased uncertainty in local conditions resulting in the return of that missing generation". </Attenborough voice> All the data is still available, it's just needs to be entered into a spreadsheet manually. Which I did once, but I'm busier these days. Pity that tool made the data too accessible; bloody agents were using it to expose the truth that the cANCer wants hidden.

Back in 2007 our birth / citizenship registration rate was around 2700-3100 people per day. This was more or less around the same in 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011. The figures never deviated a lot in these years. Working on average 2800 new people per day, this would indicate a million new people every year, year on year. About deaths I do not know, but it will be interesting to get that stats.
