Porn and the local loop

Cool so finally something on the legal front is happening with regards to telecommunications. No offence to anyone but this is my personal opinion.

Our government officials arent really the sharpest tools in the shed. They barely can run this country and now they "DoC" are trying to dabble their hands in what they call it "Telecoms Deregulations". Global trend in terms of broadband is to offer higher access speads at lower costs. In this country its completely the opposite.

The issue at hand is to get rid of Telkom's monoply of which is happening. Irrespective of the pace at which it is happening... atleast something is finally being done about it.
My question is that alot of companies here in SA offering any form of data service, multimedia service, etc... all follow Telkoms approach. The "high price low service" way. Value for money doest not exist in this country. Technologically we are still far behind the rest of the world.

What are you guys/gals thoughts on the possible outcomes of this convergence bill. Do you think things will change for the better or worse??

Answering a question by ANC MP Randy Pieterse, Gillwald said Telkom was “doing a magnificent job within the rules they have been allowed to operate in.”
I suggest this guy should go out more often.

Its one big joke, and the guys making the decisions probably dont even know what the internet is nor how to check email. Man, they prob never even had to pay for phone/internet bills, so its something "new" to them.

Retarded :(

Whats porn got to do with the local loop and the internet, its my understanding pornogrpahy is covered under the freedom of expression act, am i wrong?

All good to a degree. I am just worried about gov's intentions with the Local Loop and digital broadcasting. The latter might well be restrictive because they want to protect terestrial broadcasters at the detriment of new technology. I have been hearing terrible noises from government about HDTV etc and the reason they won't allow it.

Broadband is essential for our country if we want to become a 1st world country in the next 50 years or so... Yes, you heard me. It can be done if the right decisions are made. Affordable broadband is now key to this mix of needed ingredients to develop our country...

Isn't one of the requirements for the 2010 Soccer World Cup that we broadcast / stream High Defintion feeds ?

Me reckons Telkom needs to upgrade their int. bandwidth ......
