The Porsche Macan has made its public debut at the Los Angeles Auto Show. The compact SUV will be a rival for cars such as the Range Rover Evoque and Jaguar's forthcoming SUV, and is available to order now, with prices starting from £43,300. First customer deliveries are expected in April 2014.
The Macan (which derives its name from the Indonesian word for tiger) has a sportier look than the larger Cayenne, with a steeply sloping rear window and slim tail lights. Underneath, the car is based on a new platform that will also be used for the next Audi Q5.
At launch all Macan models come PDK double-clutch transmission and four-wheel drive as standard. The entry-level model will be the Macan S, which has a twin-turbo, 3.0-litre V6 petrol engine that develops 335bhp and gives a 0-62 mph time of 5.4sec. EU combined fuel consumption is 32.5mpg.
The Macan Turbo will top the petrol line-up at launch. It has a 3.6-litre, twin-turbo V6 petrol engine, which is being used in a Porsche model for the first time. Peak power is 394bhp and the 0-62mph time is 4.8sec, or 4.6sec with the optional Sport Chrono pack fitted. EU Combined fuel consumption is 31.7mpg.
The sole diesel option from launch will be the Macan S Diesel, which has a turbocharged 3.0-litre V6 engine that provides EU Combined fuel economy of 46.3mpg and CO2 emissions of 159g/km. It accelerates from 0-62 mph in 6.3 seconds and has a top speed of 143 mph.
All versions feature an off-road mode that can be activated by pressing a button in the centre console at speeds up to 50 mph. This function adjusts the gearshift, clutch, accelerator pedal response and torque split to maximise traction on slippery surfaces and raises the ground clearance on cars fitted with the optional air suspension system.
Another button activates a downhill assistance mode that maintains a constant vehicle speed during descents.
Three supsension set-ups will be available across the range: a steel spring system is standard for S models, while a Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) version that has electronically controlled dampers with three settings is optional for S models and fitted as standard to the Macan Turbo.
The optional air suspension allows the driver to adjust the Macan's ride height, while the rear of the car can be lowered when stationary to make loading easier.
Porsche is expected to add cheaper Macan models to the range during the course of 2014 and 2015, with four-cylinder petrol and diesel version that are likely to bring the price of the entry-level model down to about £35,000.
