Now that the name has been officially announced it's time for its own dedicated thread. The first all-electric Porsche, the Taycan.

The name is said to translate loosely as "lively, young horse" from a Eurasian dialect- a nod to the firm's crest, which has featured a leaping horse since 1952.


This name’s Taycan: Porsche names electric sedan

Porsche has now given an official name to its upcoming electric sedan that has until now been known as the ‘Mission E’.

The Tesla-chasing electric sedan will be named Taycan, according to Porsche, and it’s set to go into production next year.

The name essentially means “lively young horse”, referencing the image in Porsche’s own crest and Porsche board chairman Oliver Blume explains it like this:

“Our new electric sports car is strong and dependable; it’s a vehicle that can consistently cover long distances and that epitomises freedom.”

On that note, Porsche is aiming for a range of over 500km between charges, and there are some serious performance claims too.

Porsche reckons the car’s two electric motors will produce a system output of over 447kW, and accelerate the sedan from zero to 100km/h in under 3.5 seconds.

The Taycan is just one part of Porsche’s future electrification strategy, to which it is investing over 6 billion euros (around R92bn) between now and 2022. This also includes the creation of hybrid and electric versions of existing products in the Porsche portfolio.

New Electric Porsche Taycan Coming

Porsche is developing its first fully electric vehicle and it’s based on the Mission E Concept. The production version is expected to make its debut in 2019 and will be called the Taycan, meaning "lively, young horse".

The announcement of the new electric Porsche Taycan follows the Stuttgart-based firm's 70th-anniversary celebrations and in South Africa, Porsche lovers from across the country descended on Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit to celebrate the milestone this past weekend. Porsche marked the occasion with the reveal of the 378 kW, 911 Speedster Concept which pays homage to the 1948 356 ‘No. 1’ Roadster.

Taycan in the making

The Tesla-rivalling Taycan is currently in development and if Porsche’s history is anything to go by, it’s destined to be a special electric car.

The new electric sedan will share design cues with the 2015 Mission E Concept and the range-topping Taycan is expected to offer in the region of 447 kW from its electric motors while the base model will have at least 300 kW. The sprint from zero to 100 kph will take less than 3.5 seconds and the Taycan will have a range of about 500km on a single charge using an 800-volt charger that can recharge 80% in just 15 minutes.

The Taycan will be built at Porsche’s Stuttgart manufacturing facility. Official images of the Taycan have yet to be revealed but we will keep you updated as soon as more information becomes available.

Porsche tells us how to say ‘Taycan’, promises it has soul

Porsche recently announced that its first pure-electric vehicle, based on the Mission E concept, would be called the “Taycan”. But anyone not actually at the “70 years of sports cars” ceremony in Stuttgart where the name was revealed may be wondering exactly how to pronounce it.

Well, wonder no more. The Stuttgart-based automaker has released a short promotional video, which features both early and current models in the brand’s line-up, as well as glimpses of the new Taycan (with an example of how to pronounce it).

In the clip, the automaker also promises that the Taycan will retain the “soul” of all the Porsche-badged models that preceded it.

The new Taycan is expected to feature two permanently excited synchronous motors with a system output of more than 440 kW, resulting in a claimed zero to 100 km/h time of “well under 3,5 seconds” (the 200 km/h mark is expected to be breached in under twelve seconds). Maximum range? More than 500 km, Porsche claims.

The word “Taycan” can be roughly translated as “lively young horse”, a reference the imagery at the very heart of the Porsche crest. Watch the video below to learn how to pronounce the new moniker (hint: it doesn’t sound like “taken”)…

Porsche Releases Taycan EV Specs

Remember the Porsche Mission E concept from 2015? Well, the good news is that it’s going into production albeit with a very different name - the Taycan, a name Porsche says translates to a ‘lively, young horse’. Interesting…

Porsche has confirmed that the Taycan will utilise 2 electric motors fed by a battery pack comprising 4-volt cells, which equates to a range of 500 km. The battery pack’s biggest trump card is its ability to be fast-charged to 400km (80%) in just 15 minutes - something which was a ‘major challenge’ for the brand according to Nora Lobenstein, Porsche's head of energy storage systems.

And what of the key specifications? Well, the combined power output of the synchronous electric motors - each of which powers an axle - is confirmed at 440 kW making the Taycan a rather lively machine. It’s zero to 100 kph sprint time of under 3.5 seconds puts it ahead of the Panamera Turbo Sport Turismo in the acceleration stakes.

The forthcoming Porsche Taycan is based on the Mission E Concept and will offer 440 kW.

As far as dynamics go, nothing has been divulged at present, but several test mules have recently been spotted barreling around the infamous twists and turns of the Nürburgring-Nordschleife, so it’s safe to say we’ve got nothing to worry about.

During the initial testing phase, Porsche sent 21 camouflaged prototypes to western South Africa where more than 60 developers racked up about 40 000km worth of hot-weather testing data. Not a lot by global standards, no, but that’s just the start. Porsche says ‘millions’ of kilometres will be spent honing the Taycan and ensuring it runs like clockwork in the toughest conditions.

Porsche details its electric Taycan, due in 2019

Porsche, being Porsche, does things differently. From the very first hybrid, 119 years ago, to the world’s most successful rear-engined performance car; some would say the world’s only successful rear-engined performance car.

And its solutions to the challenges facing electric cars are just as different, as we can see from the technical details, released this week, of the Taycan, Porsche’s first pure-electric vehicle.

The Weissach whitecoats opted for two permanently excited synchronous motors (developed from those used on the Le Mans-winning 919 hydrids) using permanently magnetised rotors, rather than switching on the current when it’s needed. The result is instant torque literally from zero revs, for acceleration off the line that’ll leave any combustion-engined production car gasping - just ask anybody who’s tried to beat a Tesla away from the lights!

The motors in the Taycan (there’s one on each axle, for a total of 440kW) have been specially developed to be as light and compact as possible - to the point where the stator coils are wound with rectangular rather than round copper wire so they could get more copper, and thus more inductive energy, into the same space. Simple, but effective - a rectangular wire has 27 percent more cross-sectional area than a round one of the same size.

Porsche quotes a 0-100 time of less than 3.5 seconds and 0-200 in less than 12.

All batteries provide direct current, generated by a constant chemical reaction; synchronous electric motors, however, run on alternating current, so all battery-car makers use inverters to convert direct current to alternating current. Most inverters supply current that alternates at a fixed pulse frequency, usually 50 or 60 Hertz as per domestic 220V AC - that’s the faint hum most kids and some adults can hear coming from a fluorescent light fitting.

Porsche, however, uses inverters with an infinitely variable pulse frequency, so the motor always runs at optimum efficiency. Lithium-ion batteries also work best between 20 to 40°C, so the cooling system uses temperature sensors to monitor the car’s cooling requirements in real time, and direct the cooling water to where it’s most needed. And if you floor it, the system kicks up a gear without waiting for heat build-up to impair the efficiency of either the battery or the motors.

Porsche quotes a battery range of more than 500km, but doesn’t say how that’s calculated (if uses the now discredited NEDC, that’s likely to be more than a little optimistic).

The Taycan battery runs at 800 volts rather than the industry-standard 400 volts; this allows for very fast charging (using a special Porsche charger, of course) and enables Porsche to use lighter cables to connect the battery, inverter and motors. The energy density of the best lithium-ion cells is currently about 270 watt-hours per kilogram, but Porsche says that’s improving at about five percent a year.

The battery in the Taycan has about 400 lithium-ion cells, each generating roughly four volts, which are connected both serially and in parallel. The intelligent cooling system cooling system gets it up to temperature quickly and cools it reliably under heavy load - especially fast charging, where the objective is to pump the battery up from dead flat to 80 percent - that’s about 400km, according to Porsche - in just 15 minutes.

The Porsche charging system is designed to work at 800 volts, but is also compatible with all battery cars on the market with 400-volt technology. But it needs a lot more power than is available from the domestic grid, where even a 380V three-phase connection is only good for about 22kW. Few of the scattered direct current fast-charge stations currently online in Europe deliver more than 50kW, but Porsche is talking about a future network of stations that will push seven times that!

The bottom line is that, for the foreseeable future, recharging your Taycan at home will take all night, while existing commercial fast-charge stations will need an hour to pump enough amps into its battery for the next 250km.

Porsche says it has 40 specialists working on the Mission E (now Taycan) project, and they’ve already built more than 100 test mules, 21 of which have racked up an astonishing 40 000km of hot-weather t4 testing in the Northern Cape.

The company plans to shift to electric power ahead of its German competitors; it’s forecasting sales of 20 000 Taycans a year (that’s two-thirds of the number of 911s it currently sells) when it goes on sale late in 2019, and plans to have half of all Porsches on the market either pure electric or plug-in hybrid powered by 2025.

The Porsche Taycan Will Cost Less Than a Panamera to Challenge the Tesla Model S

The upcoming all-electric Porsche Taycan is clearly meant to be a challenger to the Tesla Model S, but any assumptions that it would sit as a flagship model over the entire Porsche range are wrong. Porsche wants to price it below the Panamera, where it can better give Tesla a real run for its money.

Robert Meier, one of the bosses over seeing the Taycan, told Automotive News that Porsche will price the new EV between the Cayenne and Panamera in the European market. That means it’d start out between 74,800 euros and 90,600 euros including taxes, or roughly between $86,000 to $104,000.

According to Tesla’s German web configurator, the Model S 75D starts at 69,019 euros, or roughly $79,350, but that’s before taxes.

The Taycan will be one of the first electric cars on the market with an 800-volt battery, meaning more power and quicker charge times. Porsche claims the Taycan will have over 600 horsepower, 310 miles of range and be able to charge up to 250 miles of range in around 20 minutes using a 350 kW charger.

Compare that to the Tesla Model S 75D’s 518 hp, 260 miles of range and a 30 minute charge time for 170 miles of range using a Tesla Supercharger. On that last note, Telsa has a fairly broad and continuously expanding Supercharger network already set up, so Porsche will have a lot of catching up to do.

Considering both the Cayenne and Panamera are priced lower here in the U.S., it’d be easy to assume that the starting price of the Taycan would also translate lower over here, but that may not be the case. It will also be interesting to see how much the Taycan eats into the Panamera’s sales numbers after it’s launched.

Some of the Porsche execs also want to push the Taycan performance models to over 200,000 euros, or $230,000, according to Automotive News, so we’ll just have to wait and see how it all shakes out.

Porsche Mission E Cross Turismo confirmed for production

Porsche has confirmed it has given its Mission E Cross Turismo concept the green light for series production, adding that it will be positioned as a “derivative of the Taycan“.

In a statement, the Zuffenhausen-based automaker announced its supervisory board had agreed to put the shooting brake concept – revealed at the 2018 Geneva Motor Show back in March – into production. The decision will, according to Porsche, create 300 additional jobs at its headquarters.

The Mission E Cross Turismo show car, which Porsche describes as a “road-ready concept”, features a powertrain comprising two permanent magnet synchronous motors with a total system output of 440 kW. This gives the electric crossover a claimed 0-100 km/h time of less than 3,5 seconds, with Porsche adding that the 200 km/h mark is reached in 12 seconds.

The Mission E Cross Turismo boasts an 800-volt architecture that allows for fast charging and a touchscreen infotainment system complete with eye-tracking technology.

The production version will hit the market at some point after the Taycan (itself scheduled for a 2019 introduction), with the latter generating 1 200 new jobs.
