Hi,

Now, Telkom has already capped us at our 3gb limit reducing our speeds to that of a 9,600 dialup, what next?? Port caps... Why is it, that we pay our money each and every month for our 3GB of data. Surely, that 3gb is 3gb of ANY data irrespective of it's source. Why now have Telkom gone and capped us on certain ports when we are still well within our 3gb cap? Not only have they provided a service without an option to upgrade, they are also telling us what we must use it for.

I've had my fair share of phone calls to them, and will continue to phone them with each and every problem I experience with DSL. I WILL take up their their time, and will consistantly demand reasons from them. I know full well that they will be the same old poor excuses, and unfortunately, it's their support staff who are the ones taking the brunt for their poor service. It's not my desire to make their their staff, as individuals, unhappy, but an unhappy workforce certainly affects a company's performance.

Never give up the fight for decent service, especially one for which we pay far more than the rest of the world.

Port caps ?? You mean network shaping by prioritising certain ports ?
 
Hi,

I guess it could be delicately put that way by a Telkom salesman or support personell. Basically, all p2p applications have come to a grinding halt. The maximum I've experienced, uncapped, has been 1 kB/s, on average, it's about 0.0 - 0.2 kB/s, and that's only the the rare occasion it does connect. Just watching it now, my only connection has been closed, so 0 downloading now.
 
Which brings one to a interesting and offtopic idea.. why not start a telkom-adsl p2p net? We got unlimited between ourselves anyway (once youve hit the cap or whatever).

This could be done, although I've discovered that those ports have even been capped locally, so if there were a server here, those ports would be capped.
 
Are these udp or tcp ports? If so - which ports? One can maybe hope they wouldnt cap if it were local traffic....
 
Hi,

I'm sure that all p2p ports, both in and out are blocked. I phoned Telkom support last night about that, and they said that it's not them who block it, but SAIX. I'm sure that it's as per Telkom's request. I've still got to phone them about a list of ports that they block. I develop software which can be updated via the internet, and although I use port 80 for many reasons, it's something I can use in an attempt to get a list out of them.

Would a http tunneler work ?? The util used to bypass a firewall ??
(to bypass the P2P cap ? )
 
I'm not too sure, unfortunately I don't know enough about them to know. It would be an interesting test though.
 
Dont worry us clever people will work it out for you..

Nmap on an adsl box shows most ports are filterd... my guess is tunneling through a different port would work, but then you would just need to steal bandwidth from somewhere else - so you may as well have bought a decent service in the first place ;)
