Hey, I'm trying to get DCC to work in mIRC over my Netgear DG834. Only problem is I can't find the port forwarding option in the router's setup. I've tried to set firewall rules but they don't seem to work.

Any help is welcome
Thanks

I'm interested to know the answer to this too! Can't find where on the router settings you can change options for port forwarding.

Inbound Rules (Port Forwarding)
Because the DG834 uses Network Address Translation (NAT), your network presents only one IP
address to the Internet, and outside users cannot directly address any of your local computers.
However, by defining an inbound rule you can make a local server (for example, a Web server or
game server) visible and available to the Internet. The rule tells the router to direct inbound traffic
for a particular service to one local server based on the destination port number. This is also known
as port forwarding.

It works the same way. Happy port forwarding guys

I saw that yeah, but I can't get it to work right. You can also not specify specific ports, only whole ranges :/

You definitely can specify specfic ports with the netgear firewall INBOUND rules. However you must make sure that your computer is being allocated the same IP address each time since it is possible for your PC to be allocated a different IP by the router and thus the NAT will fail

You should check the MAC address of your machine.
Windows IPCONFIG /ALL
or
LINUX ifconfig -a

You could also check your MAC address under the section labelled attached devices in the router web gui

Now you must allocate your PC a static IP, off hand I can't remember where this is available on the router but I think it is under the attached device section. This basically maps your MAC address to a static IP and thus you always get the same IP every time your reboot your machine

I don't know the ports for DCC ( but there is a labelled service called IRC that is probably the correct port). If not there is a section for defining services whereby you can add in the correct port

You simply specficy the INBOUND rule using the service IRC to point to your now static IP on this port.

I have done this for webservers, email servers
using the Dg 834 GUK and the DG 824

See Greyhound found my post about this :-)
Head over to below mentioned link for a description on how to this config ... it might also help you understand on how to get other apps than DC (DC++) to work.

I have a Netgear DG834, which is the router a lot of people are having trouble with port forwarding so I thought I'd post a fairly definitive walkthrough for how to set your DG834 router up with port forwarding.

Please +link this article from your website so others can find the info.

I will explain both the basic theory behind the port forwarding, and then in the second section give you a walkthrough of how to set it up specifically for BitTorrent.

GENERIC PORT FORWARDING SETUP

*Other routers also use this form of port forwarding, it may be easily extended to other router setups*

The DG834 uses services as its way of defining rules for the built in firewall. To add port forwarding, you must just add services covering the appropriate ports and then add that service to the firewall rules as a trusted set of ports. This will become clearer.

1. Login to your router, open up a webbrowser and go to 192.169.0.1 (or the address you have assigned to your router, this is the default) and login. I believe the defaults are PASS : admin PASSWORD : password (check your manual)

2. Click on the Services link under Maintenance on the left.

3. Click the Add Custom Service button

4. Name : This does not matter, call it something you will remember though
Type : In most cases TCP/UDP is what you should have here, for some very specific port forwarding you will need to be specific. Just experiment if TCP/UDP does not work, you cant harm it.
Start port : The range of ports which
Finish port : you would like to forward
Click Apply

5. Again under maintenance click Firewall Rules, then under the INBOUND SERVICES (important) click Add

6. Before entering these options you must run ipconfig from a command prompt, and note the IP Address shown. If you dont know how to do this...theres thousands of tutorials on the inet, google it.
Service : in this drop down list the service you added will be there, select it.
Action : ALLOW always (or whichever option you require)
Send to LAN server : type the IP address you found in ipconfig here
WAN users : Any
Log : Never
Click Apply

7. Thats it! Check back in firewall rules, there should be a new service added and the checkbox ticked for enable.

BITTORRENT SPECIFIC

Follow the above tutorial exactly but in step 4 use these options :
Name : Bit Torrent
Type : TCP/UDP
Start port : 6881
Finish port : 6999

A rather useful site for those setting port forwarding up for bittorrent.
btfaq.com/natcheck.pl
It explains how to use it, very helpful to check that everythings working

I hope you all find this helpful, and I also hope that Netgear eventually include this in their manual or update their amazing 'software'

Anything unclear, email me [:D]

I have managed to get port forwarding working fine to allow HTTP port 80 traffic but I wanted to limit it to one wan address, I entered this address in the WAN address column but it seems to have no effect.

Hi,

I have a Netgear 834 (not wireless), using TorrentStorm for downloading torrents and I've tried all the port forwarding business and it all works nicely but only temporarily, as when it starts to get to higher speeds like 50kb/s it completely stops, as if it's crashed. Basically i have to restart it and it starts off downloading and uploading slowly then gets nice n quick again but it repeats the same thing.

Any ideas what is wrong with it?

Hi,
I have a Netgear dg834 adsl router and i am trying to port forward server ports(80, 110, 25, etc...) to my internal server. I was using Linksys cable router and everything worked fine. I create firewall rules and stuffs, but it is still not working. My ip address is <removed due to security reasons> Dont worry about the password, you dont have to change anything. :D. I even tried rebooting the router. No luck. Please help me, thanks in advnace.

Cheers
