Hey,

(I wasn't sure where this sort of topic would belong. Apologies if I got it wrong!)

I'm quite new to port forwarding. I started the other day by setting up my router to forward ports to host a game between me and a friend. Yesterday I set up my main PC with a static IP address and have forwarded a few more ports to successfully get a small working Ventrilo server up and running.

My question is in regards to this: When I'm wanting to forward a port, I open up my router's ip address, then select Advanced Options -> NAT -> Virtual Server -> and then add my port to the list. It seems I'm only allowed to add 8 rules? What if I need to forward more ports? Or is this the limit? I'm using a Billion 5102g.

I'm just curious, I'm not sure if I'll ever need more or not.. but it depends largely on what sort of programs and games I come across. Any clues?

Please excuse my lack of knowledge on the subject. I'm learning!

Some routers have fairly limited rule capability, they usually make up for it by allowing you to set up a DMZ rule to forward all traffic that doesn't match other rules to the machine

portforward.com should help
I've been using that already. A very useful and helpful website. It was thanks to their tutorial that I got my static IP address up and running. They don't exactly explain the rule limitation on my router though.. but I see PsyWulf has answered that. :)

Ah, yeah. I do have DMZ option, however I didn't have a clue what it did. Useful! Are there any security risks for turning such a feature on?

Thanks for the help! :)

If you have lots of exposed ports and services you are opening them all to the outside world ;)
