The computers behind the Netgear, are they all using the netgear as the gateway ? If not the traffic goes in from the internet as per the rules and the PC's behind the netgear wil want to send traffic out via another Gateway.
I have to say on your spesiffic Netgear router model its full of hasles sometimes there is notheing wrong with your setup and it still either block's or allows traffic.
I'm not sure what the buffalo is you are referring to I dont think i have read everything
But I normally RDP to a server internally then from there MSTSC again to which ever pc i want to manage.

as for routes and port forwarding - hope my explanation does not confuse you even more (my explanations sometimes makes things worse)
You stay in pretoria and you need to go drop of a packet in Joburg somewhere and there is only one highway between joburg and pretoria.
Without a route you dont know where to drop it off or to even know how to get onto the highway towards Joburg. (The higway is the gateway to another town)
So you make use of a GPS (a ROUTER) the GPS (ROUTER) tells you where the highway is towards Joburg) when you get to the place in joburg you meet up with the person you wanted to give the packet to and you chit chat some then leave again with maybe something they wanted to give you, in in the end you delivered the packet and communicated with the destination address.
Or you could just take your packet and give it to someone else who knows the road towards joburg and and they deliver the packet like you would have at thier cost.
So you communicated with the forwarder and the forwarder communicated with the destination making use of thier route (GPS) thats what port forwarding does.
To make another example of port forwarding.
Lets say i installed a utility called Fpipe, Which listens on port 80 and forwards to another PC on Port 80.
You connect to my PC on Port 80 and my PC forward the connection to another server on Port 80.
In the end the server thinks the communication is from me so it will log my address instead of yours.
But port forwarding can happen via a gateway (Router)
People often confuse a router with many other things I have had people calling a switch a router.
Like A modem establishes a connection, a route directs traffic via the connection and a firewall either blocks or allows traffic to destinations witout the other it cant work so for some reason people call the whole setup a router.
Instead of a modem/router/fw they should call it a MRF
