Hi.

Does Telkom currently shape local traffic as well? If not, will they be implementing it when they drop their nukes on our country on 1st November?

Cheers

haha, local shaping on November 1st... does Telkom WANT us to leave them?

LOL, must be some drunk telkom techies, like the 40% price drop ;)

Local Hosting

Hi all....First time posting here but here goes..

I run a medium sized hosting company where i make use of open source software including the control panel etc...our server is located in johannesburg and sites load fast and the prices are very affordable + i don't charge for bandwidth usage as well...this sounds like a dream come true doesn't it but it's true, we have good uptime stats and all our clients are happy.....here comes the snagg.. bandwidth locally in S.A is very expensive as we all know and the major culprit in bandwidth usage is always mail...what i need is a solution to minimize the smtp traffic, i tried numerous solutions but would like to hear if anyone has any comments on lessening smtp traffic???

Move your mail servers overseas :P

Nah but seriously, you need a effecient spam filter system first of all... If you're medium size, you might beable to afford something like a barracuda firewall www.barracudanetworks.com , that should significantly reduce the amount of illigitament traffic into your network.

Also are your smtp servers open relay? If so you need to turn on smtp authentication, to ensure that only your users use your mail server to send email... and not dodgy spammers. (What control panel software do you use).

The third and most extreme measures would be to limit the size of mails that can be relayed both in and out of your SMTP servers...

But regards international servers; as a hosting company it's well worth investing in international hosting space... it's the only way you can offer really cost effective hosting... and the facilities, networks and uptimes available there are FAR better than anything we have in this country.

(you can get a Dual Xeon server with 2GB of RAM, 100% network uptime SLA and 2000GB's of Bandwidth a month for about R2500 per month all incl.)

P.S. you posted that in the wrong thread.

Hosting

Sorry for posting in the wrong place buddy...we make use of VHCS for our control panel...i still want to offer local hosting mate...it's 10 ten times faster and we really want to satisfy our dialup users speed wise...and frankly i see this solution locally as the best ( from a client point of view anyway ) ...although i know it is difficult to create more revenue offering this service locally ( Telkom pricing bandwidth wise ) and competing against overseas hosting solutions offered by local people i still want to see my clients happy...and i will research and cut profits a bit more just to see the end user receiving great value for their money..........at the end of the day i am in business because my clients are happy...thus do right onto the client that's my motto..

OK definitely investigate the barracuda firewall then, you'll be surprised how much unessesary traffic is generated by spam. (there are a number of others, but I've found the barracuda's well focused for malicious mail prevention)

The authentication if it is not already enabled will get rid of any other unauthorised bandwidth on your SMTP servers.

Also alot of ISP's have opted to include email traffic in the clients monthly bandwidth usage... I think this is the only viable model for smaller ISP's.
