Price of a 1TB portable drive from 2012 to 2023

Prices for 1TB external drives haven't dropped much over the years, and, in fact, the average price of these drives appears to have returned to the R875 mark after decreasing to around R740 in 2022.

Furthermore, the average price of a 1TB portable drive today is similar to 2012.

I almost choked when I saw a 4TB drive that used to sell around the R2k mark, suddenly costing R4k on Takealot.

Basically this. 1TB is old news.

Ouch!

I imported my new externals from Amazon last year as it was just so much cheaper than procuring locally even when you consider shipping and import tax. And I did the same on my previous ones in 2018.

How does the picture change if you take inflation into account?

And what was the impact of the R/$?
 
A bit off topic, but an annoying thing I've noticed in the last few months is that Googling external SSDs brings up HDDs instead. The Google ads at the top would for instance say "2TB Toshiba Canvio SSD", but when you click on it and go to Makro or Takealot or wherever it'll be a HDD, and won't even have any mention of SSDs on the page.

I at first thought SSD prices had dropped dramatically, but nah, they were just HDDs at their regular prices.

Anyone else notice this?

So calculate inflation since 2012 and you will discover how much prices have dropped since 2012.
