Yip PE's yearly month of heat and humidity is upon us. And like every year I am again thinking of getting myself a portable air conditioner. To add to the all round air con life i've got going in the office and in the car.

Came across this on Makro's website.

These any good and are portable aircons any good?

Any good? Yes

As good as a proper (split unit) aircon? No

They only ever work at all if you install the pipe properly and seal all openings, so it's not really portable in that way, and even then they're much less effecient than a built-in one at cooling a room down. I've got quite a big one (15 000 BTU) and unless you're very close to it, or it's blowing directly on you, it doesn't make much of a difference in the room.

My 2c. I own both a portable and a split-unit. The portable is not nearly as good as the split unit. If you are able, rather go for the split unit. The nice part of the portable is that it is "portable". I could take it with me on holiday to the KZN south coast, but it really did not help much there. Perhaps if you could do some plumbing to get rid of the water, it might help, but it took just 2 hours before it switched off and I needed to empty the water bin. That is not nice when you want to sleep! I am not sure how the humidity is in PE related to Margate, but keep that in mind.

I bought the portable unit when I was renting, but seeing the performance, I would rather talk to the owner next time and see if we could go half/half or something similar with a split unit.

Get a split unit. Those portables are not that great. They are noisier and not nearly as efficient.

Portable is a waste of money if you compare it to the bang for your buck you get from a split unit.

Thanks guys....
In that case will probably just stick it out with a fan....
At least down in PE we only really have one maybe two months a year that it is really very hot and humid

Soak your shirt and sit in front of a fan.

Wet towel won't cool your down nearly as much ;)

Come spend those two months up here in KZN and when you go back to PE you will never ever in your life complain about the humidity again :D

And if you want to experience hell then drive a further 2-3hrs up the coast from durbs.
