Sorry not 100% sure if correct sub, but I wanted to ask some advice.

I am renting a house, so I can't install a split unit. I really want an Aircon because apparently this December is going to balls hot.

I want to get a portable unit, but not sure which one to get. Also I would likely need someone to install a perspex pane for it? My windows don't slide they push, so I doubt it will fit. The exhaust pipe I mean.

Any recommendations?

Budget is R8500

If you absolutely must get a portable Aircon, make sure you get an inverter based one.. they are far more efficient and more importantly, far more quiet than a non-inverter one..

For several years, I relied on a GMC portable air conditioner which functioned adequately, albeit with a bit of noise, and cooled the bedroom. They only work in small bedrooms and not bigger lounges. For my setup, I purchased a sheet of perspex from Builders Warehouse and utilized a dremel tool to cut the perspex and used glue to secure it to the window. Regrettably, over time, the hose of the air conditioner broke, and as the manufacturer had stopped production of that particular hose type, the air conditioner thus became inoperative.
Subsequently, I sought permission from the landlord to install a split air conditioning system, with the understanding that upon my departure, the air conditioner would remain in place. I acquired an inexpensive second-hand unit, which I left behind upon moving out.

btw i see that gmc now offer a window kit, (extract from takealot)

HOW CAN I VENTILATE MY PORTABLE AC THROUGH A PUSH-OUT WINDOW (NON-SLIDING)?

The existing window kits for all Portable Aircons on the market are designed to fit sliding windows. Here at GMC Aircon, we realized this is not always ideal for the South African market and we have locally designed and produced a fabric window seal kit to fit other window types. This additional window seal kit is available for purchase on all of our online platforms. Please ensure the sizing is correct for your window type before purchasing the additional kit. If you're unsure of the sizing or have any questions at all then please don't hesitate to contact one of the GMC Aircon team who will be more than happy to help. “

I think if you want a decent one, you're going to have to 3x your budget. The reviews I have seen online for the Ecoflow are good, but ya, it's not cheap.

Why up the budget..?

He is not looking for a battery powered ac.. he is just looking for a portable ac, which can plug into the grid...

You think load shedding will be over in December? We stayed in a chalet where it was more than 40 degrees over summer last year and I couldn't sleep without the aircon over a 4 hour load shedding slot. Getting something with a battery backup these days just makes sense.

Not everyone is like you..

How does that perform any better than a sub R10k option? You’d be crazy to buy it for that sort of money.

At that price. It would be a more logical choice to invest in a R6000 portable air conditioner and allocate the same funds towards acquiring an EcoFlow Delta. This approach would allow him the flexibility to run the air conditioner using the EcoFlow Delta when necessary, while also utilizing the power source for other household devices.

Anyone know how big is the performance difference between a 12000 BTU Prortable aircon and a wall mounted one is ?

There's a difference and it's measurable.. the split unit 12k BTU in our master bedroom definitely does a better job than the portable one in our office and the office is smaller.. that said, it does cool the office down to where it's comfortable..

The biggest issue with the portable unit, is the noise.. it's loud and it's loud the whole time you use it.. then there is also the faffing about with the hose that exhausts the hot air..

It's bad enough that I am considering replacing the portable unit in our office with a split unit when I come into some money, over and above killing debt..

I highly recommend you go for the split unit instead..
