Portable External Drive

It's a no brainer really, go for the Samsung. Cheapest and probably the most reliable.
Is the Seagate the model that allows you to interchange between USB 2 and USB 3 by means of the removable adapter?

I went for the Samsung thanks guys. The salesman told me the samsung was the worst of the lot, but I trust you guys more.

Since when does PC zone sell 2.5" drives?

Anyway, get the Samsung.

I would not trust anything a PC Zone salesman tells me, those okes are so clueless it's not even funny.

Did you get a internal+housing or external drive?

As long as you don't blame us if it freaks out, s'okay ;)

Seriously, you probably have equal chances of having any of them freak out on you these days. pot luck. Just don't drop it!

I have been very happy with my Transcend 500GB 25M StoreJet 2.5" external. It's a rugged little hdd.... some crazy australians even drove a car over it and it survived. I won't be doing the same, but it's reassuring knowing my data won't mind being bumped, or sat on!

The hdd is amazingly fast in my mac as well. Only problem is that you can't put giles greater than I think 4000MB, but for that I use an app to split them.

About the double USB, the cable end does have 2 USB connections, but you only need one if you have USB 2.0 or greater. I think you only need to plug in both if you are using USB 1.x
I never connect both, my mac only has 2 USB ports anyway.

Still bizarre since both my PCs required 2 x USB. With 1 attached, it would just gently tick, tick, tick - knew it was being underpowered.

As far as I know the Transcend external uses a Samsung HDD, but I suppose Transcend could fit it with any drive brand they thought was best.

The reason you can't put files bigger than 4GB on it is because you are using Fat32. If you were to use something like NTFS you wouldn't have the restriction.

Driving over a HDD won't do much seeing it's not moving. Bump it or let it fall over etc however while running and you won't be so pleased.

Yup, people forget that no matter what you cover it in, be it titanium or kryptonite casing, it's still a hard drive inside with very sensitive moving parts. As you said, give it a slight bump whilst it's being used and it's going to get messy. I even saw a movie of them shooting this Transcend drive with a shotgun!?!? Bizarre. Americans....

Reminds me if that Little Britian USA episode with those dudes shooting in the woods... but I digress.....
