I always connect my portable hard drive to my laptop to upload tv series onto it. I will then plug the portable into my router and everybody in the house can access the stuff on it. Today I wanted to upload some series again from my laptop to the portable but my laptop doesn't recognize the portable hard drive. I tried it on the other laptop in the house with the same result. When I plug it into the router usb port I can access it but not when plugged into any of the laptops.

What can be the problem ?

What OS are the computers running.

Does windows see it and you just can't access it, or is it gone ? If so does the bios at least see the drive ?

First test... use a different cable.

Tried but still not working.

One has Win 7 and other has Win 8

Windows does see it but it can't be accessed.

I just tried it by plugging it into my samsung tv and then it's working but still not working on either of the laptops.

Does the router have a Safely Remove option?

Im thinking that buggered it up.

Partition table is corrupted. Can be fixed using a good tool such as gparted. I have had exactly this experience before and I got everything back using gparted.

Will search and try and find.

Funny thing it is working when plugged into router and tv but not on the laptops.

That just supports my diagnosis even further... Linux is creative in how it reads drives..

Thanks. Is it easy to fix with gparted ?
Yes but read the instructions, I also want to give this disclaimer: It is possible to irrevocably screw up your drive using gparted inappropriately so use at your own risk.
