Hey chaps.

I am desperate for some help.

I 've got a 1Tb portable hard drive, Verbatim to be specific. It's not yet 2 years old, and last night it began making spinning noises and clicking sounds. It does not show up on my PC or Laptop. Is there any way of retrieving some of the info off it? Could it just be the enclosure? or is the Hd stuffed? All my wifes wedding photo's and my 2 yr old daughters pics are on there.

Many thanks

Sounds like the HDD inside... :( You can always try breaking the enclosure and taking it out to test in a PC.

You could also try running a prog like SpinRite to see if that fixes anything. GL.

It's dangerous to try fixing a drive having mechanical issues like yours is, in that you can damage the data on it. I would recommend contact a data recovery company and have it done professionally. It will cost you, but it's the safest way to make sure you don't lose precious files and information.

What brand drives do they use inside those Verbatim enclosures?

It's still a possibility it could be the interface board in the enclosure that's dodge, rather than the drive itself. I would definitely try removing it from the case and plug it into a PC directly before rushing off.

Clicking sound indicates that the drive can't read the service area modules. Could either be corrupt module in the SA or a problem with the read/write head. Not a DIY job.
AFAIK the verbatim drives use Samsung HDDs.
