Does anyone know of any good (cheap/free) portfolio management software for personal use?

I just want to be able to track the share price, and the number of units for each share that I've invested in, and have the figures displayed nicely on a graph. I've been doing it in excel, but it gets messy when you to try to graph hundreds of data points (like the share price every day for a year). So I'm faced with the choice of trying to find a better way to do it in excel, or find a specialised app to do it for me.

I think standard banks online share trading system gives you that kind of information if you trade through them. Check them out.

Cool, thanks. I was hoping for an offline solution but I'll look into those.

It depends what you want to be able to do with the software though. Do you want analytical tools? Do you want excel integration? Share price history? News linked to your portfolio, industry, sector etc? Advanced graphing tools? Consensus and detailed EPS forecasts? Broker research? Up to date company information? Current and historical fundamentals? Delayed trading volumes? Bid/Ask quotes?

AFAIK there are no free solutions that provide these free tools as it takes huge teams behind the software to compile and distribute the data and ensure data integrity.

I know larger data companies like Reuters, I-Net Bridge or Thomson dont tailor these solutions for your average joe trader so I will ask around if there is anyting else. I use a solution called Thomson One at home but I am fortunate enough to get this at a pretty cheap annual rate being an ex-employee. The corporate rate (which is what an individual would normally have to pay) would be around $6k per desk per annum for a solution like this.

Nah, I really just want something simple :)

Something that would automatically download prices for me would be awesome, but all I actually need is something where I can input prices for each share, and the quantity of each, and have it draw pretty graphs for me (ie. price and total value over time). Excel can do it, it's just a bit of a pain.

Something like, you can manage your budget and spending in Excel, but it's easier to do it in Quicken :)

Edit: actually, mentioning quicken - looks like gnucash might be able to do what I want. I'll investigate.

That is where the entire thing comes crashing down. Price feeds *always* cost money and there are a bunch of rules attached to them.

e.g. companies may not give you access to JSE live streams without knowing your ID num. In the US everything must be delayed by 15mins etc.

Well speak to I-Net about the cost of a share price feed and you will need access to historical data as well as this is charged separately, then use Excel. You set up a template in excel with the relevant tickers and the price will be inputted. A few simple forumlas can then become your portfolio manager.
