I have NO idea how porting works.

So my contract with Cell C (via Nashua - we all make mistakes) is coming to an end next week. I have cancelled the contract effective the end of August, to be switched over to prepaid. I was told by Nashua that this is the way to keep my number.

I'm interested in porting over to Vodacom, simply because the CellC service in my area of Cape Town is pretty disgusting.

How does it work in terms of my getting a new contract. Is the new contract process independent of the porting process, or do they both have to occur at the same time?

When I called Vodacom earlier today to find out how this will work, I was told that I have to wait until the number has been on prepaid for at least 6 months. This seems fairly ridiculous? Is it true?

Go into your closest Vodacom store and apply for a contract and tell them you want to port your number. You will need the Nashua account number. For the contract appolication you will require the below docs

1. ID book
2. Latest payslip (if you get one)
3. Latest 3 months bank statements (stamped if internet banking statements)
4. Proof of physcial address.

Application form is provided in store.

You do not need to have the number converted into prepaid first before the number can be ported. Most of the ports I have done has been from contract - contract. You must however after the port is completed instruct your ex SP to stop all billing and cancell the contract on their side.

Thanks Ockie. Went in today and all seems in order. Kinda weird that they won't issue me the device until the port has been completed though. I've been told I must go back to the store once I've gotten an SMS about the port.
