Some news regarding ADSL:
Telkom states:
Please take note of the following ADSL access product launch:
HomeDSL 1024 and BusinessDSL 1024 is launching 1 September 2005 @ R680.00
per month rental, with all existing SAIX packages available.
---
What Telkom is Saying is that you can upgrade your existing line with
Telkom and get 1024Kb download and 512Kb upload speeds. Existing
equipment and lines should not need to be changed. In order to get
this service, please call Telkom's ADSL number (0800 DSL DSL // 0800
375 375) and ask. The procedure should be quick (Telkom should just
need to alter parameters at the local exchange for your line), but who
knows... (distances from the exchange, line quality - etc). You might
get an engineer visiting as some lines might not be able to run at the
new speed.
(On calling them to confirm the service - it has been delayed by a week
or two
---------------------
Capping:
>From November 1st, 2005.
Telkom is changing the Capping to be HARD CAPS. This means when your
allocation runs out - you loose ALL connectivity (both local and
international). The line will also be reset every 12 hours rather than
the current once a day (so IP's could change more frequently).
Telkom will also be monitoring how much bandwidth a user pulls, so
services like 'all you can eat' will be changing.
Some good news is we are hoping that the price will drop by about 15%
- although this still needs to be confirmed.
Basically, ISP's like Posix will be charged for the total bandwidth that
goes to the sum of all our customers.
------
In reaction to this, we are changing (for your benefit) how we will sell
the ADSL services.
Both the Shaped and Unshaped services will be sold with a minimum of
2Gb and can be increased in 1Gb steps - so now you can purchase
exactly the amount of bandwidth for your needs. Your account will
remain at the current setting and to change it, you should go to
'http://newtac.posix.co.za' (from 26th October). Anyone who
significantly exceeds their CAP will be charged for it.
----------------------------------------
Types of ADSL:
Shaped - the cheaper of the services currently at about R77 per Gigabyte,
is shaped in that SAIX prioritises, caches and limits different
services as they choose. This could mean that trying to run Voice
over IP on a Shaped service does not work as one might hope.
UnShaped - this service is about R160 per Gigabyte. Technically, SAIX
does not tamper at all with this service although that does not
exclude them from using a transparent proxy for all web traffic.
FixedIP's:
There are no Fixed IP addresses available from Telkom, however, all
Posix/Pop users are automatically put into our own DDNS (Dynamic
Domain Name Service) as soon as your ADSL is active, thus you are
reachable on the Internet as '<user>.ddns.pop.co.za' (within 15
minutes).
Logging and Stats:
Traffic Stats and the ability to modify your CAP has been available on
'http://newtac.posix.co.za' for some time. In addition, you can now
request for an automatic summary or full details of all activity to be
sent via e-mail on the 25th of each month. (This is work in progress).
Things to consider - Last month (August, 2005) you subscribed to and
used the following...
