Hey, considering upgrading from my good ol' 478 socket to a 4core system, problem is that my student budget is quite constrained... Is it possible to build a 4 core system for around R4000...

What i want is either an intel or amd 4 core cpu, ddr 3 ram, new mobo and a new gfx card...

My planned system according to www.pcint.co.za: i5 750 2.66ghz @ R1700, intel mobo lga1156 @ R850, ddr3 ram 2x2gb @ R1000, ATi hd5770 @ R1500 (rebeltech.co.za) will use old case and 420w psu and sata 500gb hd... Sum Total: +-R5000

Can anyone build for cheaper? Not interested in OC and maxing out games with 16x AA

Wont get much cheaper unless you start heading into AMD Athlon territory, which is not going to be pleasant for anything really. You could save at most R200 on the CPU by shopping around and also by looking at a Phenom 925 or 945 (they are around R1500)

Theonly way to get cheaper is to get am Athlon II 630.

Any particular reason you need 4 cores?
How about an i3 with hyper threading?

Or you could try get a Phenom second hand?
and a Asus M4A77D that supports AM2/AM2+/AM3
thing is you will have to get DDR2 and not 3..

Or get a Phenom2 secondhand and build accordingly?...

Thanks so much for the replies, much appreciated! I figured the 2nd hand market would be my only option...

@nakedpeanut, figured 4 cores would do well for future proofing, one would really not need more than 4 for a long time... i3 ht sounds appealing but to me its like getting a celeron..

Crikey so the amd 4core mobo's don't support ddr3?

I'll check the classifieds and update you lads... Thanks again...

They do. It just depends on which platform you get.

The Phenom x4 is AM2+ which uses DDR2, Where as the new Phenom II x4 is AM3 which uses DDR3.
AM2 or AM2+ CPUs will not fit on an AM3 mobo.
AM3 CPUs will fit on an AM2 or AM2+ mobo.

AM3 cpu supports DDR2/DDR3 dependent on what connectors the mobo manufacturer fits.
AM2/AM2+ cpu/mobo only supports DDR2
But there are motherboards that support both and as a result only use DDR2.

That pricing looks like dealer pricing before VAT. There is a hd5770 that is a bit cheaper but it has 512MB of memory rather than the 1GB you are looking at. It's about R300 cheaper.

Oh i see, i saw an athlon 4core for R850 on junkmail i think, and its not too bad compared to the i5 and not really weaker than a phenom ii according to one article, but i don't suppose its all that safe though, it supports ddr3 ram if i remember correctly...
Those are dealer prices i think mate but my mate does business with 'em so its cool, its not pre-vat, it includes vat go check too....
Eish bro 512mb gfx is taking chances but good thought! I only plan to use a single gpu...
Goodness me the peeps selling in the classifieds are even more expensive than pcint... Availability is pretty low, i checked gumtree, junkmail, myBB classifieds... Catch 22 :-/ What about consoles (xbox for R2000)... Or should i retreat therefrom...

nakedpeanut listen mate would the i3 quad work out cheaper than the i5 750 @ R1700... Thanks. I actually wonder if i should be complaining about the extra R1000 - R5000 seems decent for a brand new i5 system no? I wonder if i couldnt maybe get a whole core 2 quad system 2nd hand for sub-R4000...
My whole thinking behind the 4core cpu is that once i get one, the cpu will virtually never be a bottle neck again... Throw some thoughts around friends, God Bless!

The i3 would be quite a bit cheaper, but it's a dual-core with hyperthreading. It doesn't physically have four cores.

try carbonite.co.za there are some really crazy people selling at ridiculous prices. you can easily pick up a full box for that price
