Hi Guys

National Control has just issued an ALERT.

If Eskom loses one more generating unit they may have to shed load today.

Any energy saving from your side would help!

Oh look, a ladybird .. !!

LOL :)

but on a serious note this is not good if it's genuine?

last time in 2007 / 2008 they destroyed 2 of my computer controlled machines

cost over R90k just in parts to repair - each!

KS I'm curious how you got the news?

I received SMS from Eskom saying they struggling so I went and switched off nothing. Whats the point, I don't have any pool pumps or high guzzling appliances and during the day nothing is really switched on anyhow, so whats unplugging my fridge going to help besides ****ing up my food?

ESKOM made 34 companies turn off their power yesterday, instead of making households suffer. They have some kind of agreement with these companies. Read in Times this morning...too buzy to give more details right now.

They pay them a pile of money for the right to call emergency shutdowns like this.

Now if they hadn't signed the contract in the first place that would have been ideal...but that ship has sailed, so these agreements are the best plan possible under the circumstances.

Dear Eskom:

My PCs are currently drawing about 2.5KW from the wall, 2.5KW that I pay for. I ain't switching them off for you.

Yes Eskom screwed it up. Everyone knows it. The whole "I'll use as much as I can" attitude mostly screws over your fellow South Africans though.

And when there's shedding eskom will get their next big tariff increase and you'll pay more to run your 2.5kW machine

It's not as much as I can, it's my average. Why must I lower my standards from the average because Eskom can't do their ****ing jobs? Why must ANY of us lower our standards?

By lowering power usage you're playing straight into their hands. You're making the grid sustainable with the low capacity they've got. If they're forced to see that no matter how much they beg the capacity remains far too low they might be forced to do something about it.

Erm no. You'll just have to pay more. Or go green. Which means paying more anyway.

Only when we change our attitudes about energy and saving the planet will we see a change.

In other words, live in the dark ages to fit their agenda of maximizing profits?

I'd hardly call switching off items for a few hours a year, dark ages.

Also try to understand what they mean by profits. It's actually more a savings than a profit.

Nobody is asking you to lower your standards. But I'd expect people to see that the capacity constraint is a done deal. The question that remains is how we deal with it. Everyone can refuse to lower there usage...and then we're stuck with lots of candlelight dinner with cold baked beans. High five. Great success. We really showed them who is boss.

They're building 3 flippin massive powerplants. I'm going to go out on a limb here and guess they aren't aiming at forcing an artificially low capacity.

Let's not forget as further testament Medupi should have been completed over 2 years ago.
