At work we have this old pc, running xp. I want to format and re install xp, but we did not have the original xp cd or serial code. Will it be possible to do this? Or am I forced to buy a new operating system? the hardware drivers will be downloadable.

As per the link from stevenv. Yes you can if you have a i386 folder. This is only there if the pc was bought preinstalled from Makro for example.

You can get the serial, there are various free software online to extract that for you. http://pcsupport.about.com/od/productkeysactivation/tp/topkeyfinder.htm

If you don't have a i386 folder, you will have to get the install disc or just download one from the internet.

Okay thanks, will check it out tomorrow, I thought the motherboard and cpu drivers will be downloadable, but i battle to find it, even on intel's site. Just to make sure, What I will need, is the motherboard driver(which I suppose will include the o/b graphics), and cpu driver? As far as I know the HDD and screen dont need drivers, and there's no other hardware that I dont have drivers for.

The only drivers you'll really need are graphics, sound and network. The rest should function fine with those provided as part of the OS. Never heard of a CPU driver but you do get chipset/motherboard drivers, not 100% sure what extra they provide.
