Is it possible to do 2 degrees at the same time without the institutions knowing about your schemes?

I will be in my last year at Unisa next year completing a Bcom degree. But because things go so slow at Unisa (months on end between exams), I was wondering can I start another degree or diploma or certificate course at another institution.

Do any one of you know if this is possible? I'm looking to do something IT related.

Well this isn't really unisa, but at NMMU you can do two degrees over 4 years, it's called bcom rat.. It's not the same as you though because it's specially designed.. But phone and ask?

It is possible only if both the institutions in question consent to it

....

Its against regulations (Dept of Education) to do so and you will be caught. You will be expelled from both institutions and will not be allowed to continue any tertiary studies unless you appeal which is a long process.

I doubt that you'll be allowed to do two degrees at the same time, even if they're at different institutions. If i'm not mistaken, this is made quite clear by almost all universities. I dont however see any problem in doing some form of diploma whilest working on your Bcom.

I am a UNISA Bcom student and in addition to my UNISA modules, i completed a computer technnician diploma as well as a networking technicain diploma, through Boston, this year. Essentially they were just A+ and N+ with a couple of practical classes and a few silly optional subjects.

At NMMU, I got permission to start Btech subjects while I was still busy with my Ndip. My understanding is that they (my lecturer/dept head) had to request permission from the Dept. of Education to allow this.

I'm not too sure how it would work if you want to do degrees from different institutions but I would imagine it's a similar process.

I only saw the degree part (you cannot do two degrees simultaneously) but you can do a certification course and its very common for students to do that. UNISA is down now else I could post the information.

When applying to study at an institution the documentation a will almost definitely ask if you are registered elsewhere or have previous qualifications. I was registered at two institutions at the same time. I did not complete the documentation to this effect. I did mention it verbally to the course leader and was even able to get credit of the one for the other.

Just note it in your application forms, I'll bet they won't even notice and then you are covered for letting them know.

Unisa:

9.5 Concurrent registration
9.5.1 Students may register concurrently for formal and non-formal qualifications at the university, with
the consent of the colleges involved.
9.5.2 Students may not register for a formal qualification at the university, if concurrently registered for
a formal or non-formal programme at another university, except that such students may be allowed
to register for non-degree purposes (NDP) at Unisa, if their registration is accompanied by a letter
of permission from the other university granting permission for concurrent studies for non-degree
purposes and indicating the modules to be taken at Unisa.

Tuks:
Concurrent registration for two fields of study
With the permission of the dean/deans concerned, a student may register for a
degree, diploma or certificate and another degree, diploma or certificate, whether
undergraduate or postgraduate, simultaneously, subject to the regulations
applicable to the fields of study in question and to any other stipulations the
dean/deans may prescribe on the condition that there shall be no overlap in the
course content of the first degree, diploma or certificate and the second degree,
diploma or certificate. Such a concession may be withdrawn by the dean(s) concerned
if the student does not perform satisfactorily. (See General Reg G.6.)

If I'm not mistaken you must also inform the university when you register whether or not you are currently registered at a university, lying on this form will not be a good idea.

Also many people do BCom LLB which is 2 degrees.

It's still only one course.

Why is it illegal? if both are part time institutions, why can one not do it?

But yes, rather ask for permission anyway.

Sorry, not illegal (updated my post) but against Dept of Education regulations as they subsidize all tertiary education in SA and this is how you will be caught. Its very rare they make an exception and you need to apply for it.

You have to obtain permission from both Uni's. This is only for degrees/ndips.

The question is if you can do them at separate universities. There are plenty of degrees that can be done at the same time at the same institution.

I think the biggest issue is that you will have is that exams might be scheduled for the same days... and that can be a big issue.

So, my only option is to do a certificate course. And that only if I get permission to do it.

Can modules/credits for certificates be used for exemptions purposes when wanting to do a diploma/degree later on?

Dude... chill out and get laid. You will work hard for the rest of you life... now is not the time to work your self in to an early grave.

There are other ways to do it as well. I started my BSc while I was still busy with my BCom. BUT, I took the first subjects of the BSc not as part of a degree. In UNISAs terms: NDP (Non-degree purposes).

After completing my BCom, I officially registered for the BSc degree and got credit for all the NDP subjects I already completed.

But still, I would rather put in a request at both universities than risk the chance to be kicked out from one or even both.

Were you able to do that without the consent of the colleges involved?
