Post whoring

My experience with forums is, that the natural hierarchy that forms due to various reasons eg post count or debate ability, is a fun factor in forums, and taking away the post count will definately detract from the fun. The beauty of this particular forum is that there is a very wide variety of individuals with different attitudes, with diverse ways of contributing and that brings a vibrancy to this forum which makes it special.

Leave the post count alone.

Enjoy the fun factor, the post count in itself is a topic that will come up again and again through the years - it has become a part of our forum culture.

My suggestion is to enforce it selectively - so that those who want to show it off to world+dog, still be able to display it, and those (like me) who doesn't want to show it, have it hidden.

Reasoning is that not everybody want to have theirs hidden or shown.

As far as features go it would be nice however it wont in any way disincentivise or alleviate post whoring.

Pity the rep system failed so badly.

I wasn't around with the whole rep thing, I've seen it work very well on other forums though - What went wrong here?

This is clearly reverse psychology because I just realized that I would hide mine. :o

I would gladly hide or even delete my postcount.

Same what happened? Were people -repped for ridiculous things and there cliques going around +repping each other -repping others?
I've seen that happen. A forum I'm on only allows positive rep.

Correct. Not allowing negative would have helped but I don't know if this was considered or possible (as far as the forum software is concerned).
Not necessarily - as copa has realised there is potentially a psychological element that might come into play if enough forumites decide to actively hide their post count, it could start to rub off on the remaining forumites that thought their post count was extremely important causing them to hide theirs as well [would take a while though to gain momentum].
I doubt it would help. Post count is too important to the post whore.

Ive posted less in 5.5 years than most of these people have in a few months :) and i browse MyBB nearly every day.

i rate post whoring of note ;)

Some of us are immersive, ie we're online permanently (some of us since the very beginning), we have good multi-tasking skills, and enjoy bantering about with pals while crafting.

I've been gardening, took my dog for a walk, cleaned the kitchen, read several news sites and attacked a village in TW, all while being here too :)

Ye but you don't have a 60+ post count per day... :wtf: Some of them have an even greater count than that... Let's assume that it takes about 3 mins time spent per post thats 3 hours per day on this forum just posting not even including the time spent reading the rest of the posts. And I think those figures are very conservative... Some members are probably spending 10+ hours on here... not healthy

That's assuming we don't have a family of immigrants locked up in the basement, chained to a phalanx of terminals.

Social interaction has changed since the middleages.
Online social interaction has become an acceptable method of communication and since the internet has made communiation with people in other time zones possible.

Yoh! That rep system did stir the pot good it would seem. Dude named pupa went mental. Sadly the forum appears not to have matured from those days:(
