I found an old tamrac bag that should do the job if I take out all the dividers and use them to support the mount end.

Sliplock. The other major brands have their own names for similar systems, but they all essentially boil down to the same concept. Alternatively, as can be seen on that bag, your lens' case might have D-rings on it that you could use to attach it to your existing bag's likely D-rings using carabiners.

I'd really need a solution that will still protect the lens from bumps.

The lens came in a hard case:

As you can imagine it's not the easiest thing to carry around so I'd prefer a soft case solution.

BTW - the replacement cost of the case is more than I paid for my first dSLR not many years ago. :o

Huh. I was under the impression the 400mm f/2.8L IS USM II came in a soft case - guess now I know where a large portion of its cost goes... Does it use memory foam or cut foam, and does it have any mounting points at all?
Or were you looking for a bag to put the hard-case inside of?

Most of the larger fast primes come with a hard case. This particular one is moulded plastic on inside with padded contact points. The lens itself has a built inkensington locking point and fhe case has two locks.

I'm just looking for a soft case to carry the lens in.
 
I'm going to Cameraworld in Cape Town tomorrow, will be spending a bit of time there. Will see what they have on offer in-store. Does your current bag have D-rings on its sides for mounting anything?
 
Damnit... no Cameraworld for me today again :(
It's been months since I shot this roll of film, and there's always a damned reason why I can't get to the store in Cape Town to get it developed and pick up my filter... I feel like a kid that keeps getting told they won't be going to Didny Worl this year...

I stepped right into that one, didn't I? :) I think I have two bags that will fit the 400mm f/2.8. That said, I think the lens might have been bigger than the allowed size. The 400mm f/4 DO was a perfect fit though.

There was a guy at the rugby on Saturday who had a think tank bag for his 400 but I can't seem to find it on their site. I've emailed so hopefully they'll get back to me.

The franken-bag I put together did work well though. It's a pity Canon didn't have a photographer design their case though. Such a waste.

What I want to know is what happened to those 200-400s canon lent the olympic photographers? Not that I'll be able to afford one anytime soon. The 1Dx is next on my shopping list.

Now that I have a 400 it's not going to be as painful. I'll definitely still keep both the APS-C and APS-H crops though. :)
