PostCast Free SMTP server has anyone tried it?

Im not using it, but rather just use the SAIX or IS SMTP servers, and then if you're on IS you can at least send mail even though international is capped.

Well we're sending mail with our Mweb and own domain addresses through SAIX and IS, and it doesnt show that way.

Er wait a bit, I was getting a bit ahead of myself, I hadn't received the setup info for the domain name I registered paid for online. I was going on what someone else said.

Now I just received this email from them, they want me to fax my c/card (front and back) for verification.

I'm a little suspicious, what would you do? Is ipowerweb legit?

Well, it's probably ok - though I wont do it myself - too many horror stories these days and never heard of an ISP asking for copies of your CC. I would rather use another service, but that's just me...

Actually I'm doing a live chat with one of the sales guys, he must be laughing at me right now:

George L.: Hi, my name is George L.. How may I help you?
Steven: Hi I'm Steve an intl customer, I was asked to fax my c/card for verification what's up with that?

George L.: its a requirement unless you want to call in the verifications
Steven: I do lot's of online shopping and never been required to do this, it seems strange, so I'm thinking of buying somewhere else, just trying to figure out what it's all about, why is it a reuirement?
George L.: to prevent credit card fraud
George L.: we were experiencing a ton of that lately
Steven: Well please forgive me for my mistrust but when I received that email, I felt that there was some c/card fraud happening on your part, not mine.

Can I pay with Paypal? I'm verified.
George L.: we are the 3rd largest hosting company in the world
George L.: no paypal

Postcast server is ok. I've used it once in our UK office, when the building techies wouldnt let us use their SMTP.

We had endless problems with it - intermittent problems that just defied logic. It would often work perfectly for 2 weeks, and then suddenly one or two random emails (to addresses that previously sent without hitch) would get "stuck" in the Outbox for no reason. It would remain stuck with no alert issued. We eventually assigned someone to periodically check the outbox for those stuck mails.

It did work 99% of the time, however.

We moved offices after a few months and stopped using it as we no longer needed it.

But then I can't send mail from [email protected], I can only receive mail to that account.

if I reply it will show [email protected], which is not what I want

If you use ADSL with a SAIX ISP (Almost all of them) you can use smtp.saix.net as your SMTP server... from what ever domain you like, it's an open relay for users on the SAIX network... same goes for IS. Infact we use this in our business even though we have our own local SMTP servers... (it saves on bandwidth, we send about 200MB a day)

Have used Postcast without any issues.

Particularly useful if you do not have access to Telkom's SMTP server or when travelling abroad ...

Tks will try that with the other domain that doesn't provide smtp. Although the ipower package I just bought gives me my own SMTP.

Hopefully this thread will help others

That does sound rather dodgy, sending a fax of credit card, they can verify the details easily without a fax of it, I'm pretty sure:rolleyes: . I recieved some similar emails, but from some arb place claiming I won $$ and they wanted all my banking details & that sort of infromation. I clicked on the link in the email to check it out & it didn't exsist.........sneeky

Some of the bigger hosting companies do request to actually see your credit card (ie. fax or email through a scanned copy.... emailing I would avoid like the plague).

iPowerWeb I have heard of and has been around for a bit. Never used them myself. If you are feeling funny about the whole transaction why not simply go elsewhere (I'm sure there are a couple of hosting companies that do accept PayPal, but that's usually cause they can't get a credit card merchant account).

I went with ipowerweb, they gave me 50% discount. I get domain and registration, secure whois, 2500 email addresses [email protected]/org/net/biz

hosting 10000MB space and 250GB traffic, along with loads of hosting tools, vDeck, https, webmail, paypal, forums, etc. Total cost for 2 years US$85. It's supposed to be US$7.95 per month, but during live chat 24/7 with them the guy dropped to 50%, coz I told him I tried to sign earlier (Just for domain and 1 email which is like $3 per month) and saw the banner after I ordered saying I'd get 50% off any hosting packages within 6 hours. Then I got the email saying I'd need to fax c/card details. So I did the live support thing, (please loop back to beginning of this post...)

Anyway I emailed details and so far I'm very happy, while I haven't got my site up and running my email address is now

[email protected]

What more could you ask for?:)

Great to hear! Makes you wonder how many clients they need before they make any money though.

ipowerweb's provider Savvis Communications seems quite good to, so you should get reliable service. (savvis.net)

The guy said they were the biggest domain/host provider in the world, being American I'm sure he'd believe that.

And according to who I thought??

But a quick google showed their name in the top ten of many lists, so I went with them
