Potential Linux Noob

Well the Linux I installed is working well, I'm just looking for the how to books as
i'm a complete noob and using windows all these years clearly has taught me very little as
far as linux is concerned. I can't even install Java, anyone know where I can learn?

Which distro did you install? In ubutnu you can install everything via add/remove or synaptic.

Ubuntu 9.04 was the one I installed, I eventually found out how to install Java
so its working. I'm getting there, slowly but surely

Be patient. Iniatially the learning curve will seem steep because everything is so different and you will find yourself getting frustrated but in the long run I think you will love it.

As with everything when it comes to something new with computers LOL
I'm loving it already.

To add to my noobishness, when I was using windows I was using Chrome as my browser because I found that the picture quality was the best. I can't seem to get that quality with firefox and i've installed opera but still the pic quality isn't all that good.
Any suggestions how to improve the quality of the pics?

Chrome is available for Ubuntu, but still under development if you want to try it, other than that I don't have problems with pictures if I need to view pictures I use the picture viewer that comes with the OS.

well according to Google, its not recommended to download the version of Chrome they have currently. Well I browse a lot of sites that have pictures but I guess I'll wait for
the official Chrome to come out. Thanks anyway

So I'm having trouble getting sound from my sound blaster sound card.
If I switch off my pc, take the card out, restart it, let ubuntu only recognise
the onboard sound and then switch off and put the card back in, you guys think
it will work?

and you say you also have an onboard card?

My suspicion of what is happening is that both cards are being picked up but the onboard is seen as the first card. To test this can you post the output of sudo lsmod | grep snd

The easiest solution is probably to disable the onboard in BIOS.

The longer way around it is to make sure the ca0106 module for you card is loaded as the first card. This may be possible by right clicking the volume icon and changing the default card. But I’ve seen some distros have this functionality and others not.

If that is not possible, we can edit the alsa file. To do this, do the following in a terminal:
Code:
# sudo apt-get install mlocate
# sudo updatedb
# locate alsa | grep modprobe

Post the output of the last command here (obviously don't type the # when entering the commands)

i'll try that and what i'd ideally like to do is disable the onboard card. also when I right click on the volume and go into the settings the ca0106 there are 6 different ones. But I'm going to try what you suggested. thanks
