POTS Filter on non DSL line

Will a phone attached via a POTS Filter on a NON Adsl enabled line allow normal calls. My tests show that it doesnt. Waiting for my line to get Adsl enabled. Calls stopped working this morning until I pluged the filter in. Took the filter out again now and its still working. No sign of Adsl sync on my router.

yes it will allow normal calls. The filter is there to stop it from dropping the ADSL synch. without the filter, the phone line would interfere with the ADSL signal. That is why Telkom is always reminding people to check that their fax lines and Alarm sytems are also configured via a POTS filter (Micro filter).

Thanks Gary, thats what I thought. Must be a case of false positives on my tests.

The pots filter only filters out any noise from the data section of the line from affecting the voice,IOW it's a noise-cancellation system specifically to allow for Voice transmission while filtering out Data

IMO the effect is variable. I can use a phone quite normally on our ADSL line without filters or anything. Someone I know doesn't even get dial tone. I guess it depends on a few things - type of phone, exchange etc etc.

The only reason to use a filter is either a) you hear crackling when your dsl is connected when you make a phone call or b) the dsl disconnects when making/receiving a call

So is there something special about a line that won't work at all without a filter? Bear in mind that their last filter wore out/stopped working suddenly.

Rarely,i've seen cases where netgear routers would not sync when not using a filter

Best would be to use a Line tester to test whether the voice section is working as intended if the voice section of the line is the problem when unfiltered
