Hey guys,

I have developed a problem with my ADSL line where there's tons of noise on the voice line and my internet is slow and constantly disconnecting. Every time it reconnects it's at some random rate well below what it should be. For three years my downstream was 2000+ and now it's anywhere from 600 to 1700.

My stats are currently:

SNR Margin (dB): 64/174
Attenuation (dB): 515/281
Attainable Rate (Kbps): 2380/940
Rate (Kbps): 1279/508

I've reported this problem to Telkom twice. The first time the Tech called me from the exchange and said he'd fixed the problem and everything would be fine. It wasn't. I reported it again, and again he called me from the exchange and said that as far as he was concerned the line was clean and that the problem must be my POTS filter.

Now, I live in the boonies so I won't be able to buy a POTS filter until Monday, but does that make sense? Could that be causing the problems described? If not I'd like to get on to them first thing Monday and not waste my time driving an hour to buy something I don't need.

Thanks.

Try plug you phone directly into the line without the POTS filter or the ADSL modem attached. If there is still noise then there is a short somewhere (normally corroded/wet connections or splices on the poles). If there is no noise then yes it is your POTS filter.

Report it as a noisy phone line. Get the guy to come to your house and actually listen to it, then he'll go up the pole to find the degraded connection.

You can also disconnect everything on the line and plug your modem directly, without a filter and see if it is still intermittent.
