Hi can someone please help.

I would like to setup a simple system so that I can host a website/ftp server from home.

My setup is as follows.

ADSL that comes into a telkom POTs modem (DHCP that seems to always be 192.168.10.100). This then links back (with CAT5) to a wireless broadband router (mecer I think), then all my PC's are on that network.

My internal network is a 10.50.0.0 network. I have a static route on the Telkom POTs modem that points back to 10.50.0.0 network. The wireless broadband router has options for Virtual servers, Dynamic DNS etc, however I can't seem to access my network from outside. When my wireless broadband router does the Dyndns update it seems to pick up a 192.168.10.100 address. This is a private address isn't it? Why isn't it picking up a public address that my telkom modem has?

Please help!!!

Thanks

Yes, but I want to be able to FTP files from the internet to my home PC.

What ADSL router do you have? And what wireless router?

Well this is the strange part. I have no clue. Its a 4 port 10/100 with wireless. There are no marking on it, no writing, NOTHING...

If I can remember correctly I think it was a mecer 802.11g.

The updates from dyndns seem to be working though, its just that its getting a 192.168.10.100 address. Where is this address coming from? It can't possibly be the exteral address on the Telkom Modem, because this should be a public address and not a private one.
The IP address of the wireless router is 10.50.1.10.
All the PC's use 10.50.1.10 as the Gateway.

192.168.10.100 sound like the DHCP of the wireless.
You external IP should be something in the range 165.165.*.*

Router have 2 IPs. One for the outside world and one for the inside (yours here is 10.50.1.10). Can you connect to your router at 10.50.1.10 and logon to it? It should give you a summary of the settings (Mine is the first page when log on) it will show a WAN IP. This is you external IP, but the DDNS should handle it. You will have to set a fixed IP for your "web Server". That IP should be outside of you DHCP range (10.50.1.10 should be OK) and you should setup a virtual server on that IP. (And have apache or whatever running).

IPs in the range 10.*.*.* and 192.168.*.* are for local networks only. If packets with these aresses get to the "outside world" they will be ignored. So the IP 192.168.10.100 is not your outside IP. (or should not be).

Do you still have your manual for the router?

Unfortunately I have no Manual.
If I open a web browser, I can get onto http://10.50.1.10 (this opens up my wireless broadband settings. Internal interface is 10.50.1.10. external interface is DHCP.
If I log onto http://192.168.10.200 (this opens up the telkom Pots modem)
External interface is DHCP, internal interface is 192.168.10.200.

AAHHH, just a thought. Could this senario be the cause???

My telkom modem is set to use DHCP to get its external address, which is fine.
Its also configured to dish out DHCP addresses to my wireless broadband router (hence the 192.168.10.100 address)?????

My wireless broadband router is setup to receive DHCP for its external interface which is is getting from the telkom Pots (192.168.10.100)

What address should the external interface on my wireless be? Surely a private address as it still has to get through the telkom modem. If so, then each time it updates with dyndns, its going to give that private address. Which is not fine.

I'm at a loss. Can this setup work? What about using a dyndns client running on PC. Never used one, not sure how they work. Will they still try and get an address from my wireless?

You cannot run a DDNS on a PC that has no fixed IP. Something as to be fixed so that that Fixed place can give the Dynamis IPs out.

If you have two sets of IPs and DHCPs on your internal network, this could very well be the problem. Here is what I suggest. Use your ADSL Modem/router on it's own without the wireless router. (You will have to plug your router into the PC network.) Set it up to use a Virtual server for your website.

If this work, the just add your wireless to the mix. Setting the Wireless router to a fixed IP on less or more that your ADSL router. It should not have a DHCP server running, but should use your ADSL router for that. See if that helps. This is pretty much how my settup is (Except that I host outsite of my ADSL of course).

Thanks, that will most definately work, except for the fact the those damn Telkom Pots modems do not have DDNS functionality, i doubt they even have virtual server functionality, hence the use of the wireless broadband router.

I would put the wireless broadband router on the outside, except it only has a wan port that takes RJ45 and not RJ11, so I have to use the telkom modem.

Maybe I should just go and get myself a netgear.

Is it a router modem or just a modem? I have the Planet ADSL modem/router ADE3100A. Very nice. Even have a nicer DHCP server that the Linksys WRT54g I have. They are R650 if you are intrested. But you should be able to get the Marconi Modem Manual on the Marconi site. Try that first, see if there is a firmware/driver update. Firmware can add features. It will cost alot less. PM me if you don't come right.
