Ok so i tried to clean my heatsink on my processor cause of overheating. I tried getting the thing off but couldn't. Got the one side to ails off but the other side didn't wanna come off. I canned the idea and put everything back. I plugged everything back in and turned on, harddrive powers up, fan is spinning but there's no boot sound and the monitor remains black. I don't know if this related but i noticed a small glass tube with silver metal on either ends with a thin piece of metal inside on the floor from where i lifted the tower. No idea where it came from. I desperately need this thing to work :(

the glass tube you refer to is a fuse. i highly doubt it came off your motherboard...because then there would be no life (plus motherboards do not use those type of fuses)

i thought the same thing, that fuse doesn't seem to make sense. There is power on the board fan and harddrive is moving just no boot

hahahaha, now i got try to open it again. Anyone know how to remove a socket 754 cpu heatsink?

please dont take this the wrong way, but the amd skt 754 heatsink holds no secrets, you should be able to figure it out pretty easily without asking for help.

but i do recognise that people across all walks of life have different talents, so if your skills in this area are lacking then why not enlist your fav. techie friend to give you a hand? and give him R10 and a beer for his effort.

i dont do my own accounts, and there is a very good reason for this. :-)

but the instructions are as follows:
remove left clip, remove right clip, remove heatsink.

i know how but the darn thing is so stiff i'm scared i rip it off and break it, hahaha

lol if that fuse did come from your Mobo maybe its time for an upgrade :D

But seriously, it shouldn’t be to hard to get off, make sure the clips sticking out the other side of the mobo are closed if that makes sense....I have had some that have broken and thus had to use pliers to squeeze the clips closed and then pull the fan off...Just be gentle and she should slip off just fine ;)

aaaargh its bloody stuck. I'll have to get pliers or something i'm too tired to struggle right now. Thanks for the help guys

Solidus you did not happen to play ZA Prom ?

Nah never heard of it.

Well it turns out my processor was stuck on heatsink via thermal paste and I'm sitting with a few bent pins :(
Now I'm pcless and internetlessness at home, somebody help!

bent pins are bad!!
if you cant manually straighten, ive managed this only a couple times, then your CPU is screwed.
Thermal paste is normal and is required, but often by the time you need to remove the heatsink, the paste will just come apart. Unlucky for you i guess.

Yah I have that niggling feeling its not gonna be fixed this time round.
I was planning on upgrading but not this soon cashflow is still low.
I know thermal paste is required but it just got stuck on the wrong end :(

Thermal paste or Thermal Adhesive? :P Adhesive you just pop screwdriver inbetween the sink and the Chip and crowbar it off

The bent pins can usually be saved with bending them straight so try that
