Power factor correction

the downlighters should have their own ballasts which would correct any phase changes.

Cool, I'm happy to spend to improve, but if there's no need so much the better :)

If you pay for KVA then you should consider it depending on how bad your power factor is. If you pay for KWH then it won't make a change to your bill.

Just a Jozi resident fighting our evil billing system :)

We are billed in KWH, so no savings to be made.

OTOH, in the bad winters we have experienced brown-outs, which hurt appliances. Would power factor correction assist in e.g. brown-outs ?

No. For brown-outs you could use an AVR (automatic voltage regulator), but i doubt it will make sense economically.
What may be possible is installing an Over/Under voltage relay with a contactor to entirely disconnect your house when the voltage is too low or too high.

+130 downlighters and most every gadget :)

rrh,
man thats gotta hurt!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i know not all the lights will be on at the same time (hopefully), but in theory:
130dl x 50w = 6500w
130dl x 30w = 3900w

130dl x 8w LED = 1040w (brighter than 50w)
130dl x 6w LED = 780w (same as 50w)

130dl x 4w LED = 520w (brighter than 30w)
130dl x 3w LED = 390w (same as 30w)

or mix and match for different rooms and areas.

:)

solutions to problems!

When I hit the 'emergency' button - which turns on most all of the lights in the house - the first call I get is from Eskom, after which the security company :)

For the balance of the time: I installed a Clipsal C-Bus system to control the lights. This allows all lights to be dimmed, which (with a few exceptions) is how I normally run them.

It also helps that I am single ... :)

what does eskom call about.

Also, please install a large capacitor in each phase, eskom will love you for creating a leading power factor :P
