Lost and Confused...
So the power has been out for about two hours now, apparently there is a fault at Orlando Power Station. I'm taking bets about how long this outage will last.

:erm: Orlando Power Station was decommissioned in 1998. So I guess it's been a 13yr fault then? :p

It's load shedding and then they say it is a fault.

However long it's out for, you'll be amazed how it comes back almost exactly on the hour... No random off at 9.13 or anything like that, oh no... It'll go down at 9am exactly and then come back on at 1pm or 3pm exactly... 'tho spokesman after spokesman from Eskom will tell you it's NOT load shedding... Funny that?!

Well I see them digging up trenches to our small substation in our little suburb, to reach the new rdp homes some 15km's away.

How I hope I can get a ticket out of this hell.

You see the fskers are providing services to all, not by building more or any new infrastrastructure, no by saddling older hardware already burdened with more users.

Genetic, that's what City Power said when I called them to report it. But are you serious, 13 years?

Interesting... Unless it's still used by City Power for distribution and not generation?

A massive power outage has hit parts of south and southwestern Johannesburg on Saturday morning.

Affected areas include Soweto, Mondeor and Newlands. The outage was caused by attempted cable theft at the Orlando power station.

City Power technicians have been dispatched to the station and are trying to restore electricity to affected areas.

“We are experiencing a fairly large power failure at the moment affecting a large part of the south and southwestern suburbs of Johannesburg,” said City Power's Louis Pieterse. “We are just busy clearing the damage and then we will restore supply.”

Orlando Power Station functioned until 1998, way beyond it’s intended lifespan.

The power station was finally closed in 1998 after 56 years of operation. The cooling towers remain a significant landmark in Soweto, and will continue to do so as one of the highlights on the tourist route through Soweto in their new life as a vertical adventure center.

Genetic, very very interesting links there. So we have cable theft from a power station that hasn't worked since '98. Only in SA...

The people who steal power cables:twisted: I swear.low life scum:mad: They stole ours and it took power out for like 6 hours.

We had a power failure this morning for about an hour..... Hmmmm

So power seems to be back all over, except a small section on one street... Where I happen to be!!! City Power, be warned, angry customer on the line!

My power went out for 4 hours yesterday

Ditto.

And there have been the odd hour here and hour there as well. The other day it went off at around 2am and came back on at 7am. Normally wouldn't be a problem but I happened to be doing work at the time so I wasn't impressed.

Yep, and you said it had been out since 9am... 9 to 1... 4 hours... Funny how it takes the same time to repair a "problem" as it did for a load shed.

Greg, you right. Any prediction on how long it will take them to get power up by me? It sounds like you do have a crystal ball lol

What I've noticed with the outages here lately is that there will generally be a momentary dimming or flicker of the lights. A minute later it dies. Then, when it comes back on, it'll only last a few seconds to a minute and then it dies again. Then it's restored properly within 10-30 minutes thereafter. Quite a noticeable pattern. Whether or not that indicates underhanded goings-on from their side, I wouldn't know.

If only...
I'm in Northwold and the usual turn-around time here is exactly 4 hours. Sometimes 'tho, it's like Flanders said... Power comes back on for 5 or 10 minutes then kicks out for another 30 minutes or so. We had 21 hours without power a week or so ago... I'm pretty sure it started as a load shed but they ran into problems when they turned us back on.
I'm convinced they are load shedding and blaming it on theft or some other failure... Thing that gets me is I'd rather upfront the load shedding than appear to be incompetent, but hey... I'm not Eskom.

We were told ahead of time that there would be a power failure today.
That's why we shut down the server and everything.
