JOHANNESBURG - Several technical problems at Eskom's substations have constrained the power grid once again.

Consumers and large industrial customers have been urged to use power sparingly.

However, Eskom's Andrew Etzinger says this doesn't mean that load shedding is on the cards.

“There is no immediate risk of a shortage or load shedding but nevertheless we are asking the public to please support us by using electricity sparingly over the period so that we can bring our reserves back to an adequate level.”

In January, the power utility warned that maintenance being conducted over the next few months will keep electricity supply tight but it denied any formal plans for load shedding.

This year will see the departure of Eskom CEO Brian Dames and experts say his replacement will face a large challenge.

Dames announced his resignation in December due to personal reasons.

His resignation comes at a critical time for the power utility as two major power stations are due to launch.
