Large parts of PE (including mine) are without power - apparently a 130kw tower collapsed.

Is there any form of social decorum that says when someone should switch off their generator? I've walked around the area and the noise from my generator isnt really noticeable - except obviously for me as its running right outside.

A large area of Port Elizabeth has been hit by power cuts following the collapse of a 132kV tower outside a substation, the Nelson Mandela municipality said on Friday afternoon.

It appeared steel thieves had "compromised the stability of the structure", the municipality said in a statement.

The collapse affected the suburbs of Rowallanpark, Chelsea, Lorraine, Arlington, Summerstrand and Walmer.

It was hoped supply would be restored by 6am Saturday. - Sapa

Hopefully it will be back up by noon.

I'm prepared with my generator but Vodacom clearly isnt - no internet access until the power is restored. Such a solid infrastructure they have.

Wait.. do the engineers not check these types of towers anymore after what happened in Durban last year (i think) when an area was without power for 2 weeks due to a tower that the "steel thieves" had collapsed.

not so lucky to have own generator,

I just booked into the garden court hotel for the night, they where rocking some serious generators there, whole hotel was running like there was no issue, just had to use the service lifts though. or in my case climb 12 floors, (good exercise) but had hot water, and tv, lights and hot breakfast

That would have been an option . . . but then the missus and kids would have wanted to come too . . . :D

My bro's in PE - he had MacD's last night... We had a power failure in Rooihuiskraal (Centurion) as well, but only lasted 4 hours...

Considering i got it almost for free, southern sun frequent guest credits, cost / benefit analysis was great. the life of a bachelor...... :D

I was hoping it would stay off until at least tuesday its impossible to have lectures at NMMU when theres no electricity and I have a Applied Maths test on monday :D. It amazes me how randomly the power grid is set up in this city, I was driving down villiers road and it was dark from end to end except for one block where the lights were on! Made no sense at all! Luckily Mill Park and Linkside were not affected, they rarely are :D
